As a long-time fan of Makoto Shinkai’s heartwarming and poignant anime films, I can hardly contain my excitement about the upcoming live-action adaptation of “5 Centimeters per Second.” Having grown up with these stories that resonate deeply within me, it’s truly remarkable to see them taking another step into reality.

It seems a new live-action anime production appears to be underway. With hits like One Piece inspiring them, Hollywood is scouting for fresh content, and Japanese filmmakers are following suit. For years, Japanese studios have been adapting anime into live-action, and now one has set its sights on Makoto Shinkai’s works. Given that 5 Centimeters per Second will be receiving an adaptation with Toho’s assistance, it’s not surprising they are taking notice.

As reported by the distributor, the anime film “5 Centimeters per Second” is being transformed into a live-action movie, with Studio Spoon handling production. Yoshiyuki Okuyama is directing the project, while Ayako Suzuki is responsible for the script. At present, a complete cast for “5 Centimeters per Second” has not been finalized, but we do know one of its leading actors – Hokuto Matsumura. He will appear in the movie, and fans may recognize him as the voice actor behind Sota from Shinkai’s Suzume.

5 Centimeters Per Second unfolds in three distinct segments, with each part advancing the story through time. The narrative begins in 1991, introducing Takaki Tono, our main character, and his school friend Akari Shinohara. As children, they quickly bond, and as they mature, their feelings for each other deepen. Misunderstandings and mixed signals create hurdles along the way. From exploring the complexities of love to dealing with loss, 5 Centimeters Per Second covers it all, setting high expectations for any future live-action adaptation.

Other popular anime like Naruto and My Hero Academia are also being adapted for Hollywood. Recently, it was announced that Carlos Lopez Estrada will write and direct the film after Marc Webb and Lee Isaac Chung left the project. As of now, we can only speculate whether or not Your Name will successfully transition to Hollywood.
