Mama Opens Up About Daughter Sophie’s Tragic Death

Shelly Gibson is mourning the death of her daughter.

Following the announcement on April 14 that Sophie Nyweide had passed away at the age of 24, her mother shared the profound sorrow and pain the family is experiencing in the wake of this tragic event.

Shelly, an actress herself, shared with TMZ that she is deeply grieving and saddened. “Her acting career may have been short-lived,” she said, “but it brought her immense joy. She wasn’t a child star nor did she experience any harmful situations on those film sets. She was always protected there. Now, let us grant her the peace she deserves.

On April 14th, Sophie’s body was discovered beside a river in Bennington, Vermont, close to a lean-to – a structure made by propping branches at an angle. The police in Bennington informed TMZ that while she didn’t reside there, she often spent time in the vicinity with a few other individuals. None of these people have been identified as suspects so far.

Shelly added, “It appears she had been taking drugs, and she was quite small for her age. When she passed away, she was with others whom I did not recognize.

The exact reason for the death hasn’t been identified yet, as we’re still waiting on autopsy findings and toxicology reports. Nonetheless, it has been confirmed that there was no sign of suspicious activity or foul play involved.

In Shelly’s statement, she mentioned that there’s currently a probe being conducted, which they estimated could last between 6 to 8 weeks. Therefore, she couldn’t provide a definite answer at this time.

Growing up, I was privileged to share the screen with the likes of Michelle Williams and Russell Crowe in films such as Mammoth, Noah, and An Invisible Sign. It’s a dream come true for any fan like me to have been part of their cinematic journey at such a young age!

In a beautiful tribute, it was stated that Sophie, who was exceptionally artistic, energetic, and wise beyond what one might expect for her age, achieved so much during her life. Her essence was such that she moved not just walked, but danced on this earth.

The obituary went on to say, “She yearned passionately (almost insisted!) to become an actor.” Unbeknownst to her, her mother had also been an actress. With a grace that left us all in awe, she followed suit in the profession.

However, away from the confines of film sets, which appeared to make her “happiest” due to the liberty it provided for self-transformation, Sophie encountered her share of “challenges and hardships.

The inscription noted that Sophie was a compassionate and naive young woman, which unfortunately made her an easy target for others to manipulate. She passionately immersed herself in both writing and drawing, and much of her work reflects the profound emotions she experienced and also the wounds she carried. Many of her literary pieces and artworks serve as guides through her battles and hardships.

Sophie went to the first showing of the movie “Bella” in New York City, where Tammy Blanchard and Eduardo also appeared.

Sophie had her stuffed mammoth by her side at the film’s press conference. 

Sophie went to the annual Hamptons International Film Festival’s RoC reception, where she was accompanied by director Marilyn Agrelo and actress Emerald Angel Young.
