A Connecticut man is speaking out after escaping his alleged captivity.
32-year-old individual, reportedly saved from a self-inflicted house fire in February following decades of suspected mistreatment at the hands of his stepmother, Kimberly Sullivan, is now speaking out about his claims.
In a statement made on April 15 through Survivors Say, the man revealed his harrowing ordeal: he had been held captive for over 20 years and subjected to domestic abuse. This captivity began when he was taken out of school in the fourth grade at age 11 and continued until just two months ago, when he deliberately set a fire that ultimately led him to freedom at the age of 31.
The individual identified as “S” went on to express, “Today, I choose to take a step towards regaining control over my life and share my side of the story as it unfolds.
Currently, an individual identified as S, who tipped the scales at just 68 pounds upon discovery, as reported by NBC Connecticut, is concentrating on the uplifting facets of his voyage.
He went on to say, “I’ve made a significant improvement and grown stronger compared to the day I was rescued from my house. I am immensely thankful for the care I’ve received ever since.
Additionally, he expressed his appreciation towards all those who lent a hand throughout the journey, such as “first responders, law enforcement investigators, and anyone working tirelessly to ensure that those who abused me are brought to justice.
He expressed his gratitude to every healthcare professional who aided and cared for him: “Thank you.” Moreover, he was particularly grateful for the opportunity to celebrate his 32nd birthday with them – an experience he had never had before.
He expressed his thanks, saying, “I’m thankful to the conservator and my lawyer. They will assist me in navigating the upcoming legal proceedings, and they’ve been indispensable to me. I appreciate their unwavering assistance.
In wrapping up his communication, S expressed a need for personal privacy, stating that it’s not merely a narrative, and revealed his outlook on what lies ahead.
He mentioned, “A lot has been shared about the ordeal I experienced, but only a piece of it. Maybe someday, my entire tale will come to light.
TopMob News has contacted representatives of Sullivan seeking her response regarding her stepson’s statement, but we have yet to receive a reply.
After S was saved from the February fire, investigators accused Sullivan, aged 56, of first-degree assault, second-degree kidnapping, first-degree unlawful restraint, cruelty to individuals, and reckless endangerment in the first degree, as stated by the Waterbury Police Department in March. However, the attorney for the stepmother, Ioannis Kaloidis, has refuted these accusations against his client.
Kaloidis stated to NBC Connecticut last month that the statement is completely unfounded. He clarified that he never confined him in a room and didn’t restrict his movement in any manner. Instead, he offered him food and shelter. He was astounded by the accusations against her.
As more information unfolds, I firmly believe you’ll come to understand that she is not the ‘villain’ portrayed in the media. In fact, I am confident in stating that this is far from the truth.
According to NBC New York, Sullivan has denied the charges against him and remains free on bail until his upcoming trial, which was set during a hearing on March 28th.
