Bungie has postponed the launch of Marathon, which was initially scheduled for September 23. The game’s new release date hasn’t been revealed yet, but we can expect an announcement later this autumn. When it does come out, you’ll be able to play it on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, and PC through Steam.
Here is the full message from Bungie on the delay:
I’m truly grateful for your heartfelt responses about the unveiling of the Marathon and the Alpha playtest, not just for the feedback itself, but for the passion that underscored it. And let me express my appreciation for your understanding as we took the necessary time to listen carefully and map out our future actions.
Based on every comment and live chat on social media and Discord, your voice has been powerful and unambiguous. We’ve absorbed this feedback and recognize that more time is needed to shape Marathon into a game that truly embodies your enthusiasm. After thorough deliberation among our development team, we have decided to postpone the September 23 launch date.
The Alpha phase provided us with a chance to fine-tune and center our game around elements that would make it exceptionally captivating – the thrill of survival under intense situations, enigma and backstory hidden at every turn, raid-style endgame encounters, and Bungie’s signature first-person shooter combat style.
During this period, we’re encouraging our team to develop an immersive, high-pressure gaming environment similar to what a game like Marathon demands. Essentially, we aim to foster closer ties between our developers and the gamers who matter most – our audience.
For the upcoming months, we’ll carry on with the closed testing phase, involving previous Alpha testers, to roll out gameplay improvements and trial fresh features once they are activated.
Some of our immediate focus areas will be:
- Upping the Survival Game
- More challenging and engaging AI encounters
- More rewarding runs, with new types of loot and dynamic events
- Making combat more tense and strategic
- Doubling down on the Marathon Universe
- Increased visual fidelity
- More narrative and environmental storytelling to discover and interact with
- A darker tone that delivers on the themes of the original trilogy
- Adding more social experiences
- A better player experience for solo/duos
- Prox chat, so social stories can come to life
We’ll get back to you later this Fall with updates on our progress and the new launch date for the game. We appreciate your patience and are eager to share how your valuable input is shaping Marathon into an extraordinary gaming experience.
