Marathon Developer Says Price is “Definitely Going to be a Conversation”

Though Bungie has disclosed numerous aspects of their upcoming hybrid PvPvE shooter titled Marathon, they’ve kept mum regarding its pricing details. In a recent chat with streamer Dr.Lupo, assistant director Del Chaf has maintained the company’s veil of secrecy when it comes to answering price-related queries.

In response to the initial inquiry regarding the price, Chafe indirectly referenced the studio’s earlier declarations that Marathon would not follow the pricing structure of a standard game. DrLupo acknowledged this by stating, “Yes, I noticed that on Twitter.” You can find the entire interview here.

Chafe mentioned that at the moment, discussing the topic isn’t feasible. However, he assured us that there will be discussions on this subject in the future. When we’re prepared, we’ll unveil some intriguing details. In fact, you and many others are likely to provide valuable input once we start talking.

Continuing his discussion, Chafe emphasizes that when Bungie reveals the cost of Marathon, it’s bound to spark a lively debate among gamers. According to him, there are ambitious objectives in play – particularly initiating the game with an alpha phase – to foster

Earlier, Joe Ziegler, the director of Marathon, hinted at the game’s pricing without disclosing specifics in an interview. He mentioned that Bungie is dedicated to making Marathon truly exceptional, and that players might have differing opinions about what constitutes a fair price for a game.

Ziegler stated that our aim is clear: we’re dedicated to crafting an exceptional game, and we believe we’ve set a solid foundation for it now. However, everyone has their own idea about what a fair price is.

Speculation, however, suggests that when Marathon releases on September 23, it might cost around $40. Neither Bungie nor Sony has verified this price point yet, but if true, it would align with other online shooter games such as Helldivers 2. Furthermore, the same rumors hint at an open beta for Marathon in August, allowing a larger number of players to test the game before its official September release.

This month, I’m excited to share that I’ll be part of the closed alpha testing for the upcoming game, “Marathon.” Bungie has just shared the system requirements for this exclusive test, and it looks like my gaming rig might meet the mark! At a minimum, they’re asking for an Intel Core i5-6600 or AMD Ryzen 5 2600 CPU, 8 GB of RAM, and either an Nvidia GeForce GTX 1050 Ti (4 GB), an Intel Arc A580 (8 GB), or an AMD Radeon RX 5500 XT (4 GB) graphics card. I can’t wait to dive into the game and see how it scales!

Just this week, Bungie unveiled a fresh trailer for the game known as Marathon. Named the Alpha Intro Cinematic, this video offers insights into the game’s backstory and discloses some important details about the characters, the Runners. Additionally, it hinted at the presence of support AI ONI, a connection that subtly links the upcoming extraction shooter to the original Marathon trilogy.

Marathon is under development for PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X/S.
