Marathon Features Aim Assist on Mouse and Keyboard to Help Parity With Controller Users – Bungie

In a recent live broadcast for the game Marathon, Bungie explained their reasoning behind implementing aim assist for mouse and keyboard users, as opposed to limiting its usage to controller players only.

In the video discussion, developers explained that they made aim assist adjustable regardless of input device (keyboard/mouse or controller) as a novel approach for fine-tuning the game’s balance. Additionally, this change aimed to ensure equal potential for skill mastery among all player types.

Generally, help with aiming is turned off for users who rely on mice and keyboards, whereas those using controllers often have the option of a slide control to adjust the level of aid they require while aiming.

The developer explained that they’re experimenting with an adjustment to maintain balance between mouse-keyboard and controller usage. They want to test this change, understanding that it may not be in its optimal position yet. Their goal is to gauge user feedback, ensuring they preserve the skill level and expression that come from using either mouse-keyboard or controller without compromising parity.

This feature allows you to turn it on or off according to your preference. Some players prefer a completely raw experience without any assistance for aiming, so we’ve included this toggle option in the menu. We don’t want it to be a required choice; people have different playing styles, and we aim to cater to these differences. By gathering feedback, we can adjust the feature based on individual expectations.

“This is us getting this thing out there to get some thoughts on, and then iterate from there.”

Criticism has been mounting among players participating in the ongoing alpha of Marathon, who find issue with the game’s implementation of aim assist. Some have vented their frustration on Reddit, such as Redditor Carmelo_v, who expressed concern about the overly aggressive nature of the aim assist even when using a mouse and keyboard setup.

Streamer Shroud, famous for his skills in competitive first-person shooters on Twitch, has also spoken out against the aim assistance in the game. He argues that this feature is negatively impacting the PC version as it strives for balance in gameplay between players using keyboards and mice, and those using controllers.

During his stream, Shroud expressed that while he understands the effort to ensure crossplay between consoles and PCs, he fears it will negatively impact the PC version of the game. Essentially, he’s saying that the attempt to make both platforms equal is actually weakening the PC experience.

The game titled “Marathon” is planned for release on September 23 and will be available on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S. Although Bungie hasn’t officially announced the game’s price yet, they’ve hinted that it will be a topic of discussion. Speculations suggest that “Marathon” might debut at around $40.
