In simpler terms, Bungie’s new game, Marathon (their upcoming extraction shooter), won’t include proximity chat at launch on September 23rd. This is because the developers believe that some players might misuse the feature and create an unpleasant gaming environment due to toxic behavior.

View Urgent ForecastProximity chat function lets you hear other players when they’re close by. This makes it a valuable tool because overexcited players might accidentally reveal their location. Additionally, this feature encourages spontaneous teamwork among players, as some may decide to collaborate to reach a shared goal.
However, this also exposes you to various unpleasant comments from the gaming community, which may not always be kind or considerate.
According to game director Joe Ziegler, when it comes to proximity chat in games, he doesn’t view it as something we should avoid. In fact, he considers this more of a matter of preference rather than a technical issue.
My concern is ensuring that we design a secure setting for players within that area.
“I don’t think anyone really has a good solution to that just yet.
Given our commitment to maintaining a peaceful and respectful environment for all players, I believe it’s prudent that we hold off on implementing proximity chat until we’ve found an effective way to address potential misconduct.
Bungie hasn’t definitively dismissed the idea, but given their past performance, it’s unlikely that they will significantly alter how players interact online in a basic sense.
As an ardent supporter, I ponder over the feasibility of maintaining Marathon as a sanctuary for all players. If such a goal is sincerely pursued, it seems challenging to find a practical approach that won’t upset the delicate equilibrium of the game. Perhaps, it could be implemented as an optional feature, but this might inadvertently disturb the current dynamic.
Ziegler emphasized that if there was a magical approach to finding that solution, he firmly believes we’d definitely make it happen.
“But right now, it is a challenge that many companies are trying to figure out.”
