Marathon Shouldn’t be Judged Before it’s Out – Former Concord Developer

As Sony and Bungie prepare for the launch of the upcoming game Marathon later this year, a former Firewalk studio member who worked on the unsuccessful multiplayer title Concord is urging fans to allow Marathon its chance before speculations about potential failures surface. On Reddit, the developer going by -MrSpug- shared their experiences working on Concord, highlighting the difficulties faced by live service games that struggle to attract an audience.

The developer stated that ‘Concord’ was a project many players were familiar with and understood its outcome. ‘Concord’, unfortunately, did not resonate with players, and this message echoed loudly. It was heartbreaking to witness our project flop and become the butt of jokes on the internet. However, I have learned that failure fuels success. No one feels more dejected than those who invested their time, expecting to captivate gamers worldwide. I am not soliciting pity or empathy, for this is the nature of the game – you either win or lose. The line between triumph and defeat is slim. I took a risk, and I lost.

Apart from discussing Marathon, the developer expresses enthusiasm upon catching a glimpse of it, along with observing the dedication of those involved in its creation.

Perhaps some of you think it’s time for me to step out from hiding, given that I’ve stopped being secretive about my involvement,” they went on. “I hope you don’t, but understand that individuals invest a great deal of effort into creating projects with the dream of becoming the next big success. The enthusiasm and dedication of the developers shown during the Bungie stream for Marathon, filled me with optimism and anticipation for its future.

I appreciate their bravery for stepping out of their comfort zone, tackling something unfamiliar and unproven, with no guarantee of success. It requires immense courage.

In the Reddit discussion, the creator expressed his viewpoint that people should not make judgments about a game until after it has been released. He stated that labeling something like “Marathon” as a failure before it’s even available seems absurd to him.

Over the weekend, I got some exciting news about Marathon dropping! They unveiled some gameplay and announced that this shooter is coming to my PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S on September 23rd. Starting April 23rd, there’s even a closed alpha test for us gamers to check it out firsthand. On release day, you’ll find three maps and six characters, known as Runners, ready to join the action!

During an interview, game director Joe Ziegler expressed his desire to deliver the high-quality finish synonymous with a shooter produced by Bungie, along with intricate gameplay mechanics that empower players to craft their unique narratives via victories and setbacks within the gaming environment.

Ziegler expressed his belief that the ceiling for success could potentially increase due to several factors, with one key element being the rise of a new generation who have been immersed in sandbox gaming experiences. This includes players of battle royale games as well as others who primarily play other sandbox shooters. For this group, they’re generating numerous stories within these games, and often these narratives are influenced by the game systems they interact with regularly.

Marathon will not be a free-to-play game. Bungie, however, has not yet confirmed its price.
