Marathon – Sony Wants to Give it the “Optimal Chance” to Succeed

As a passionate admirer, I’ve noticed that Bungie has kept a low profile recently concerning the matter of using an independent artist’s assets without permission in the context of Marathon. There was speculation about a new trailer being released along with pre-orders opening in June, but it seems the marketing strategy may have been put on hold. Although there might be a delay, Sony still expresses enthusiasm for the game, despite any dark clouds hanging over.

During a recent Fireside Chat, the head of PlayStation Studios, Hermen Hulst, mentioned that the feedback received during the closed alpha testing was diverse. Nevertheless, they are determined to provide the game with the best possible opportunity for success when it’s officially launched.

According to Hulst, Marathon aims to launch a groundbreaking, creative, and highly captivating game. This will be Bungie’s first new release in more than a decade, which makes us extremely enthusiastic about its debut. Currently, we’re moving through the testing phase, scrutinizing the Closed Alpha that our team has recently completed. We’re absorbing all the insights gained and utilizing the tools we’ve developed to comprehend how the audience interacts with the game.

The feedback we’ve received has been diverse, but it’s valuable because that’s why we perform testing. When the product is launched, we want to ensure it has the best possible chance of success. The process of testing, making adjustments, and then testing again is crucial for the success of a live service, not just before launch, but also during the entire lifespan of the game.

It’s uncertain when the next beta will take place as Bungie is still working out the details and there are some uncertainties, such as the price. However, they have been developing a public test roadmap. Possibly, pre-orders might open at Gamescom in August since the extraction shooter is set to launch the following month. Whether it will gain popularity or not is yet to be determined, considering its potential success depends on being among the top five best-selling games of 2025 in the United States.

Marathon launches on September 23rd for Xbox Series X/S, PS5, and PC.
