I was initially slated to portray Jadis the White Witch in the forthcoming Netflix reboot, but it seems that both Netflix and Greta Gerwig are reconsidering their choices, starting anew in the casting process. [This means they’re looking for a new actor or actress for the role.]
As reported by Jeff Sneider, Grammy-winning popstar Charli XCX is no longer being considered for the role of Jadis the White Witch, a part previously played by Tilda Swinton in Walden Media’s Narnia trilogy (2005-10). Initially, Charli XCX was mentioned as Netflix’s top pick for this role. However, Sneider now reveals that director Greta Gerwig intends to audition three prominent actors for the part of Jadis. The identities of two of these actors have been disclosed – Margaret Qualley from The Substance and Emma Mackey from Sex Education. The third actor slated for the test remains undisclosed at this time.
As a dedicated film enthusiast with a penchant for the fantastical, I’m thrilled to share that Greta Gerwig’s first of two upcoming Narnia films is rumored to be adapted from C.S. Lewis’ sixth novel in The Chronicles of Narnia series, “The Magician’s Nephew,” published in 1955. This film will serve as a prequel to the widely recognized first book, “The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe.”
Intriguingly, “The Magician’s Nephew” promises to unveil the genesis of Narnia itself, revealing how the enigmatic White Witch arrived in this magical realm, why it is ruled by a human king and queen, and the mysterious tale behind the ubiquitous lamp post that graces its landscapes.
In addition to unveiling that the character Digory Kirke, an older professor who entertained the Pevensie children in “The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe,” was among the initial group of children to explore Narnia with his companion Polly Plummer, the novel from 1955 also hints that Digory’s enigmatic and morally questionable uncle, Andrew Ketterley, played a significant role in “The Magician’s Nephew,” acting as one of the main adversaries to Jadis. However, as of now, no casting decisions have been made for either Digory or Polly.
Meryl Streep to Voice Gender-Swapped Aslan
Among the other cast members, only Oscar winner Meryl Streep has been considered for the Narnia reboot. She would play the character who appears in every one of the seven Chronicles of Narnia books. This character, a talking lion who serves as Narnia’s guardian and king, was created by C.S. Lewis as an allegory for Jesus. Interestingly, while male in the novels and the live-action film trilogy (with Liam Neeson providing the voice), Aslan is planned to be portrayed as female in Gerwig’s adaptation.
The movie titled “Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew” will be the fourth live-action film adaptation from C.S. Lewis’ Chronicles of Narnia series, and it’s set to start production in July at Shepperton Studios in the UK. Unlike Netflix’s usual strategy of only a limited theatrical release for its movies, this one might have an extended run on IMAX screens, following the success of Greta Gerwig’s negotiations.
On Thanksgiving Day 2026, “The Magician’s Nephew” will make its worldwide debut only on IMAX screens, before it becomes available on Netflix for a Christmas Day premiere.
