As a film enthusiast with a deep appreciation for British television and a keen interest in biographical dramas, I am thrilled to hear that Lesley Manville is set to play Margaret Thatcher in an upcoming ITV series. Her recent impressive performances in The Crown have solidified her place as one of the most talented actors of our time.
Lesley Manville is set to portray the role of ex-Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher in an emerging biographical show.
If the rumors are true that this project will air on ITV, it would signify a significant role for the esteemed actor, who has lately garnered accolades for her impressive portrayal of Princess Margaret in seasons 5 and 6 of The Crown on Netflix.
Before joining the show, Gillian Anderson, known for her roles in Sex Education and The X-Files, had taken on the contentious character of the Prime Minister in the fourth season. In this installment, she delved into the Prime Minister’s complex relationship with Queen Elizabeth II (previously portrayed by Olivia Colman).
Manville has a formidable challenge ahead, as Anderson has earned both a Golden Globe and an Emmy award for her exceptional portrayal in the role; yet, given Manville’s remarkable acting abilities, she is more than capable of meeting and surpassing this standard.
The Sun broke the news first, sharing that an anonymous industry insider conveyed to them, “Securing the support of a major broadcaster like ITV for our production is a significant endorsement of the project, even before we’ve finalized our top casting.”
As a long-time fan of British television and a devoted follower of Maggie’s acting career, I find it quite intriguing that ITV’s latest biopic production featuring her will be a departure from their usual collaborations with the BBC or Channel 4. Having seen some high-quality dramas produced by ITV in recent years, I believe this decision is a shrewd move on their part.
Based on my extensive experience in the film industry, I can tell you that the production process is a complex and intricate one. From the initial idea to the final product on screen, it takes time, resources, and a lot of coordination. The statement “They added: ‘It hasn’t been commissioned yet and so filming is way off, but if everything falls into place it could be on our screens at some point in late 2025′” reflects this reality.
Among the four Margaret Thatcher dramas being produced at present, one is Channel 4’s “Brian and Margaret,” featuring Harriet Walter from “Succession” as the former prime minister. However, not every project assurance of making it to completion.
Manville’s upcoming projects include “Moonflower Murders” on BBC One, a follow-up to the popular BritBox series “Magpie Murders.” Additionally, she will feature in Apple TV+’s thriller “Disclaimer,” helmed by renowned director Alfonso Cuarón (Gravity).
