Margot Robbie & Jacob Elordi’s Wuthering Heights Roles Spark Debate

As a die-hard fan of period dramas and literary adaptations, I must confess my initial excitement upon hearing that Margot Robbie and Jacob Elordi will be taking on the roles of Cathy and Heathcliff in the upcoming adaptation of Emily Brontë’s Wuthering Heights. However, after reading some of the criticisms about their casting choices, I find myself questioning whether these two young actors possess the “Psychologically Tortured vibes” necessary to portray the iconic, tortured lovers.

Margot Robbie and Jacob Elordi will soon be wandering around the moors.

The actress famously known as Barbie, who is expecting her first child, is said to be joining forces with an Euphoria alum in Emerald Fennell’s forthcoming adaptation of Emily Brontë’s novel Wuthering Heights. Yet, some social media users have raised eyebrows about the casting for the passionate duo of Heathcliff and Catherine.

The original poster doesn’t mean any disrespect towards Margot Robbie and Jacob Elordi, but they seem to lack the dark, tormented essence required for portraying Cathy and Heathcliff in a Wuthering Heights adaptation. They were thinking someone more unconventional might be better suited for the roles.

Another X user suggested Elle Fanning for the role of Catherine and Dev Patel as Heathcliff, calling them “the casting I would die for.”

The user made it clear they hold no ill feelings towards Margot Robbie and Jacob Elordi, but when it comes to playing characters from ‘Wuthering Heights’, they disagree. They find their contemporary appearances not suitable for the roles.

Another viewer suggested that Robbie and Elordi might not have been ideal choices for their roles, given the “iPhone Effect,” which refers to an overly contemporary appearance that makes actors seem unsuitable for playing characters in historical dramas. However, this wouldn’t prevent them from watching the movie.

In a post, they expressed, “Although I believe both Jacob Elordi and Margot Robbie suffer from what’s known as ‘iPhone face’, I’ll still attend Wuthering Heights. However, to me, being attractive is the top priority for an actor.

Without a doubt, this upcoming movie isn’t the first time the book has graced the silver screen. Over the years, it has been transformed into films and television productions on numerous occasions. The most notable adaptation was in 1939, which garnered eight Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture. In 1992, a movie version hit the screens with Ralph Fiennes making his screen debut in the lead role. More recently, Tom Hardy starred in a two-part television adaptation of the text in 2009.

Emerald Fennell, who clinched an Oscar for Best Original Screenplay in the year 2021 for the movie “Promising Young Woman”, is all geared up to pen, direct, and produce the upcoming adaptation. Filming for this project is scheduled to commence in the United Kingdom in the year 2025.
