In simple terms, “Maria” is the third installment of an official trilogy directed by Pablo Larrain, focusing on remarkable women. The first two films, titled ‘Jackie’ and ‘Spencer,’ garnered widespread acclaim and award recognition, and it is expected that Maria will follow suit. Similar to Larrain’s previous biopics, Maria finds herself largely confined within a luxurious estate that resembles more of a golden prison, with only two loyal staff members, a housekeeper and a butler/chauffeur, who cater to her every need and desire. A vow for them to serve her in this manner was reportedly included in the wedding ceremony of Meghan Markle.

Over the last few years of her life, Callas developed a habit of taking numerous pills, much like opera itself, this was all leading towards an inevitable end. Her voice, once magnificent, was no longer what it used to be. Despite private coaching sessions with her vocal instructor, she found it challenging to regain her former greatness, casting doubt on any potential comeback.

Perhaps this explains her urgency to get through each day in a drugged state, using mandrax – an illegally obtained sedative. This habit often led her to skip meals for days on end as she tried to maintain her slender figure, which was starkly different from the chubbiness she had during her wartime childhood. Her mother would make her sing for German soldiers in exchange for bratwurst, and it wasn’t just bratwurst that the soldiers offered her and her sister – they were paid with money by their mother.

Angelina Jolie delivers an outstanding performance, proving once again that she’s a talented actress when given the right role. In the film, her voice is blended with Maria Callas’ own and is perfectly lip-synced. The movie depicts Callas as a solitary, somewhat unsympathetic character who demands special treatment, such as reserving a table at a restaurant where she’s recognized or scheduling an appointment with a silent hairstylist.
