Maria Shriver is detailing her upbringing in one of the most famous American families.
In her recently published autobiography titled “I Am Maria“, the author, being the daughter of Eunice Kennedy and Sargent Shriver, shares her experiences of growing up with the knowledge that her uncle, former U.S. President John F. Kennedy, was elected as the country’s leader when she was only five years old.
Looking back on it now, Maria wrote in her published memoir on April 1st, the success of her uncle Jack triggered an unexpected storm of alterations in my adolescent years. Before I knew it, my family was hurriedly leaving Chicago for Washington D.C., and they seemed to dive headfirst into their new lives without pause.
In fact, even when her brother served as president, Eunice championed the cause of individuals struggling with neurological disorders and disabilities. She was instrumental in founding the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development in 1962, followed by the establishment of the Special Olympics six years later.
Maria pondered, realizing our new dwelling serves as a hub for those who share the conviction of shaping the world positively. However, she acknowledged that stepping into public service at a young age wasn’t without its hurdles. Though she found joy in it much of the time, the relentless, whirlwind lifestyle her parents cultivated sometimes felt overwhelming to her.
Even though she carried her father’s surname, Maria – who was married to Arnold Schwarzenegger from 1986 until their separation in 2011 – experienced the immense weight of being associated with the Kennedy family.
She clarified, “When I stepped into the world, there were additional responsibilities to shoulder.” “Regardless of where we went, folks welcomed us with enthusiastic screams and warm admiration—a response to the Kennedy family’s achievements, charm, wealth, celebrity, and impeccable appearance.
The 69-year-old individual shared insights into her experiences encountering admirers of her family and discussed the impact these interactions had on her personally. [Her siblings are Robert Shriver III (70), Timothy Shriver (65), Mark Shriver (61), and Anthony Shriver (59).]
In my latest reflection, I penned down a profound thought: “This insight has deeply ingrained itself in me.” The essence of it was: “Maria alone is not sufficient. Merely being Eunice’s daughter falls short. The label ‘Shriver’ isn’t enough. And even being Maria Shriver, doubly so, simply isn’t adequate.
Following numerous heart-wrenching family losses, such as the assassinations of her uncles John F. Kennedy in 1963 and Robert Kennedy in 1968, Maria revealed that her family’s coping mechanism left her grappling with the consequences by herself.
She remembered that the world appeared frozen in motion around her, but none of her family seemed to pause for a moment during that time,” she said. “There were no tears shed, no conversations had, no expressions of grief, and no attempts at comfort – not even towards me or my siblings. To me, it was bewildering, almost frightening.
Despite the weight of her illustrious family lineage, Maria persevered and forged a life that allowed her independence. With Arnold as her partner, she brought forth four children: Katherine Schwarzenegger (aged 35), Christina Schwarzenegger (aged 33), Patrick Schwarzenegger (aged 31) and Christopher Schwarzenegger (aged 27).
In a subsequent poem in her book, Maria speaks directly to her kids, conveying the wish that they won’t harbor the same self-doubt about their worth that she experienced during her childhood.
In the process of starting this exciting journey, remember never to harbor any self-doubt about your significance, she advises. Always remember to never question your importance, and never let go of your identity or your roots.

Now that Arnold Schwarzenegger’s children – Katherine Schwarzenegger, Christina Schwarzenegger, Patrick Schwarzenegger, Chris Schwarzenegger (with ex-wife Maria Shriver), and Joseph Baena (with former housekeeper Mildred Baena) – have grown up, he has a new favorite grandpa! He enjoys spending time with his daughter Katherine and her husband Chris Pratt’s three children together – Lyla, Eloise, and Ford. As Arnold shared in 2022 on Jimmy Kimmel’s show, “Being a grandfather is the easiest thing. They come over for a couple of hours, we play, I put them on my horse or with the dog, and after two hours, they leave.
In 1986, Maria married Arnold, but they divorced in 2011 following the revelation that he had fathered a child from an affair. However, their son-in-law Chris praises how well they co-parented publicly.
As the former first lady of California, Maria and Arnold successfully raised four outstanding children. This isn’t always effortless, even for those with wealth and fame. Chris expressed his admiration for her parenting techniques in an interview with Today in May 2024, stating that he wishes to learn from her.
“I want to ask her everything,” Chris said, “such as ‘What did you do? How did you not spoil them? How did you prevent them from being ruined?'”
Chris believes the key to Maria’s success lies in accountability and a strong faith. He hopes to incorporate these values into his own parenting style with their children. When Maria enters the room, Chris emphasizes, respect is expected as she insists on good manners and accountability, deeply rooted in her religious beliefs.
Patrick, born in 1993 and eldest son of Arnold and Maria, credits his brother-in-law Chris for helping him secure a notable role. In an interview with Jimmy Kimmel in 2022, he recounted how Chris suggested the part of Donny Mitchell in The Terminal List on Amazon Prime Video, mentioning that if Patrick wanted it, he needed to gain 20 pounds, engage in tactical training, and learn Navy SEALs’ mannerisms. Training with actual Navy SEALs was a dream come true for him. Since then, he has played Saxon Ratliff in The White Lotus and Tim Tebow in FX’s American Sports Story. Despite his connections, Patrick emphasizes his dedication to his craft, acknowledging that people might think he only got roles because of who his father is, but they are not seeing the years of acting classes, weekly school plays, character development hours, or the countless rejected auditions he has endured. Recently, he announced his engagement to model Abby Champion in December 2023.
Currently, Katherine Schwarzenegger is the oldest child of Arnold Schwarzenegger and Maria Shriver, born in 1989. She has her own family now, marrying Chris Pratt in 2019 after a year of courtship. In 2020, they gave birth to their daughter Lyla, followed by Eloise in 2022 and Ford in 2024. Reflecting on her motherhood, she wrote, “When I became a mother, it felt like all my life experiences had led me to that moment with my baby in my arms, and it was perfect.” Additionally, she has a stepson Jack, who Chris and his ex-wife Anna Faris welcomed in 2012.
In my perspective, family will always hold the top spot in my priorities. Yet, I felt a wave of disappointment when I faced criticism last year for expressing gratitude towards Katherine on social media for delivering me a beautiful and healthy daughter. Some individuals found my post insensitive considering that my firstborn, Jack, was born prematurely.
In an interview with Men’s Health in 2022, I shared my thoughts on the matter: “Articles started appearing, saying things like ‘That’s so cringeworthy! How could Chris Pratt thank her for a healthy daughter after his first child was born premature? It’s such a dig at his ex-wife.'”
I found these comments appalling. My 9-year-old son, Jack, might read those words one day. They will remain forever etched in digital form. It truly upset me, as I believe that the blessings in my life, which are cherished by those close to me, should not be seen as a burden. I felt so distressed that I cried over it. I couldn’t help but think, “I hate this situation where expressions of gratitude for new additions to our family become a source of negativity and misunderstanding.
In August 2012, Jack, the child of Anna and Chris, arrived approximately two months earlier than expected and needed to stay in a specialized newborn care unit for some time.
At a 2021 gathering for the Global Alliance to Prevent Prematurity and Stillbirth, the actress reminisced about the moment when she brought Jack home for the first time. Those early years were marked by numerous doctor’s visits, five surgeries, physical therapy sessions, and an abundance of joy because Jack was and continues to be the sweetest, most endearing creature I could have ever envisioned.
Approximately one year and a few months after Katherine and Chris got married, they had a baby girl named Lyla Maria Pratt Schwarzenegger in August 2020. Her middle name is a tribute to Katherine’s mother. Although Chris tends to keep his personal life low-key, he did reveal that Jack was already excelling as the older sibling. As Entertainment Tonight reported in 2021, Chris shared that “He’s really good with her.” Lyla always tries to remove Jack’s glasses, and he remains patient with her, making him a wonderful big brother.
Move ahead to March 2022, where Chris and Katherine expanded their family by welcoming baby girl Eloise Christina Schwarzenegger Pratt into their lives.
The actor from Zero Dark Thirty stated to TopMob in June 2022 that he is a father of two girls. He shared that his eldest daughter has adapted beautifully to her new role as an older sibling. At first, she seemed curious about the new addition, asking questions like “What’s that? Who’s that?” But now, she’s warmly embraced the idea and frequently wants to hold her little sister. He expressed that these precious moments are what life is truly about, and he feels incredibly grateful and filled with happiness.
8th November, 2024 saw Katherine and Chris welcoming their son named Ford Fitzgerald Schwarzenegger Pratt into the world. A brief while afterward, they shared this news on Instagram with a message expressing joy and gratitude, stating that both mother and baby were healthy, and Ford’s siblings were overjoyed at his arrival.
Christopher Schwarzenegger, born in 1997, is the youngest son of Arnold and Maria Schwarzenegger. Similarly, Christina Schwarzenegger, born in 1991, is their youngest daughter. Christopher has mostly kept a low profile but serves as Vice Chair of the Special Olympics Founder’s Council and Director of Development at Indus Valley Media. His previous work experiences include Malka creative content agency, sports psychologist Trevor Moawad’s team, and he graduated from the University of Michigan with a psychology degree. Christina, on the other hand, is an executive producer, with her works including the 2018 documentary “Take Your Pills” and the 2022 doc “Take Your Pills: Xanax”.
Ever since I learned in ’96 that I was involved with Mildred Patricia Baena, Arnold’s housekeeper at the time, and became Joseph’s father, it’s been a secret I’ve had to keep close to my heart. Born in 1997, it wasn’t until much later that I discovered the truth about our relationship. As he grew older, it became more apparent to me, and managing this secret was a challenge.
In his 2023 docuseries ‘Arnold,’ the star of ‘The 6th Day’ admitted, ‘I really didn’t know in the beginning. I just started kind of feeling. The older he got, the more it became clear to me, and it was then just really a matter of how do you keep this quiet? How do you keep this a secret?’
Though I considered it a significant mistake in my life, I cannot help but feel immense pride in Joseph’s accomplishments. He has turned out to be an exceptional young man, much like his father Arnold. In the docuseries, I shared, ‘It was wrong what I did, but I don’t want to make Joseph feel that he’s not welcome in this world because he is very much a part of it. And I love him.’
Like his famous dad, Joseph is an actor with a passion for fitness and also works in real estate. He even competed on season 31 of ‘Dancing With the Stars.’
Chris and Anna got married in 2009, but after eight years, they announced their separation. Previously married to Ben Indra, Anna hinted that her life with Chris wasn’t as perfect as it appeared. In a 2021 episode of her podcast “Unqualified,” she admitted that both she and Chris had preserved the image of their relationship, even within their close circles. Furthermore, Anna—now married to cinematographer Michael Barrett—suggested that being in the same industry as her ex-husbands might have contributed to the competitiveness in their relationships. She added that during her other marriages (with actors), she and her partners didn’t manage eliminating competitiveness effectively, especially since she was reluctant to reveal vulnerabilities and handle comparisons well.
