Mariah Carey Shares Mom Patricia and Sister Alison Died on Same Day

I cannot fathom the depth of grief and sorrow Mariah Carey must be feeling right now. Losing not one but two beloved family members on the same day is unimaginable. As a fan, I’ve always admired her strength and resilience, but this loss seems to transcend all boundaries.

Mariah Carey is in mourning.

The singer who’s known for “We Belong Together” announced that her mother, Patricia Hickey, and her sister, Alison Carey, tragically passed away on the same day.

Mariah shared with TopMob News on August 26th that she is deeply saddened by the loss of her mother over the weekend. Regrettably, on the very same day, Mariah’s sister also passed away in a heart-wrenching sequence of events.

The 55-year-old went on to say, “It’s a blessing that I could spend the last week by my mother’s side before she passed away.”

Mariah expressed her gratitude for the affection and backing from everyone, as well as their understanding and regard for her personal space, during these challenging circumstances.

Mariah didn’t share additional information, including Patricia and Alison’s causes of death.

Patricia was an accomplished opera singer and vocal instructor who honed her skills at Juilliard. She later got married to Alfred Roy Carey, together they had three kids named Morgan, Alison, and Mariah. The marriage ended when Mariah was only 3 years old.

For quite some time, Mariah has openly discussed the challenging bonds she shared with her mother and sister, elaborating on these connections in her 2020 autobiography titled “The Meaning of Mariah“.

“Much like other parts of my existence, my relationship with my mother has been a colorful blend of contrasts and overlapping truths,” the Grammy winner penned down. “It’s never been solely in shades of gray – it’s encompassed the full spectrum of feelings.”

In their early years, Mariah and Patricia developed a strong connection through their mutual passion for music. However, when Mariah reached the age of 14, she observed a change in their relationship. One day, while they were driving together, Patricia started singing the hook from Michael Jackson’s “Somebody’s Watching Me” in an extravagant, operatic manner. This action caused Mariah to laugh, which prompted Patricia to ask why she found it amusing.

In her memoir, Mariah wrote, “‘Um, well…that’s not how it goes,’ was all I could manage. She looked at me, draining the light from the room until there was nothing left but coldness. With a low growl, she retorted, ‘I hope you someday reach even half my talent.’ That remark still echoes in my mind, causing pain and discomfort.”

Mariah, mother of 13-year-old twins Monroe and Moroccan (with ex-spouse Nick Cannon), expressed that it was her first realization of the profound impact inappropriate remarks from a mother can have on a child.

“Being admired for your professional achievements often brings envy from loved ones, but when that jealousy surfaces early and especially from someone as close as your mother, it’s an unusually deep hurt.”

Apart from recounting other events, she likewise brought up her challenging episodes with her sister Alison in her memoir. She mentioned that by the time Alison turned 20, she had already been married, given birth, divorced, traveled extensively, and returned home to a life where Mariah stated that Alison was exchanging “her body for money and drugs.” This paraphrase aims to maintain the original meaning while using simpler and more conversational language.

Mariah shared an unfortunate incident from her past, where her sister allegedly gave her Valium at age 12, offered her a small amount of cocaine hidden in a pink nail, caused severe burns on her skin (third-degree burns), and attempted to involve her with a pimp.

Mariah concluded that experience was so distressing that it might be the cause of her feeling perpetually adolescent. She put it in words, “I am yet to fully overcome that period.”
