Emilia Schüle, who portrays Marie Antoinette in the series, refers to Mondays as “Versailles Days” because those are when they can shoot inside the actual palace (depicted above), which is closed to the public on those days. She explains that during filming, everyone lives in Paris and their Mondays are particularly lengthy. They rise at 4:30 am to arrive on set by 5 am, starting to film as soon as the first light of dawn breaks.
In Marie Antoinette’s realm, as depicted in the upcoming BBC Two series, it’s all about striving for perfection. France in 1783 is a world that blends elegance and extravagance, where even simple tasks like dressing take Schüle three hours to complete. Yet, with revolution brewing on the horizon, Marie Antoinette’s fashion has undergone a transformation – her outfits are becoming more relaxed and somber, while the materials used are denser. Additionally, there’s a new trend for wigs, which despite their grand size, remain light due to being hollow inside.
According to Schüle, what’s most challenging is donning a corset; however, she has discovered some useful tips. “Initially, I put it on but leave it only partially fastened for about two hours or so – the heat from my body makes the fabric more elastic. After that, I can eat comfortably, and during lunch, I loosen the corset slightly to make space for meals!
