As a lifelong Nintendo enthusiast who grew up playing the original Mario Kart games on N64, this new promotion at McDonald’s has me feeling like a kid again! I can still remember collecting those toys back in 2014 when I used to devour Happy Meals during summer vacations. The nostalgia hits hard with these designs, and it’s fascinating to see how they’ve evolved over the years.

A fresh promotion has kicked off at various McDonald’s outlets, and it’s great news for Nintendo enthusiasts! Now, you can find toys based on “Mario Kart 8 Deluxe” in Happy Meals. These toys showcase a variety of racers from the Nintendo Switch game, including Mario, Luigi, Peach, Bowser, Donkey Kong, Toad, Toadette, Yoshi, Gold Mario, and Rose Gold Peach. Each toy comes with decorative stickers for customizing your Kart, and there are numerous Kart and wheel designs to choose from. For instance, Luigi’s Kart floats in anti-gravity mode, with the wheels rotated upwards.

Fans of Nintendo may recognize these designs as they’ve appeared in two Happy Meal promotions by McDonald’s over the past decade. Back in 2014, there was a promotion tied to Mario Kart 8 on Wii U, with similar toy designs. More recently, in 2022, this promotion reemerged under the generic “Mario Kart” title, replacing the 2014 Mario Kart visor toy with a new Toadette figure. This time around, McDonald’s has made slight changes to the promotion.

For this latest collection, each toy includes a novel function allowing children to detach the vehicle’s body and interchange the chassis. Some Karts such as Luigi’s come with an anti-gravity chassis, but if you prefer Toad with it, simply switch the figures if you own both. On the other hand, Donkey Kong and Bowser boast larger wheels and a more substantial structure. New figures for Gold Mario and Rose Gold Peach have been introduced, and the motorbikes from previous campaigns (which included Yoshi and Peach) have been replaced with standard Karts. This change was probably made to ensure compatibility with the new swap mechanism across all Karts.

Overall, this Mario Kart promotion is quite exciting! Ever since McDonald’s first introduced these figures, they’ve been a hit, making it delightful for both young and old fans to have another chance at collecting them. The new swap feature in the promotion adds an element of novelty compared to previous ones, encouraging people to search for multiple figures. It’s amusing to see such an old game getting another Happy Meal promotion, but considering how well Mario Kart 8 Deluxe continues to sell even after all these years, it does make sense as a marketing strategy.

All of this serves as a reminder that we’ve basically been playing the same Mario Kart game for more than a decade now. Fans are starving for a new game in the series, but for now they’ll have to satisfy that hunger with some chicken nuggets, fries, and a toy instead.
