Mario Kart 9 Announced, But Fans Demand Sequel to Nintendo’s Best Racing Game

Finally, the Nintendo Switch 2 has been officially announced, and it’s no surprise that a new installment of the classic game, Mario Kart, will be released alongside it. Details about Mario Kart 9 (which may not even be its final title) are scarce for now, but the Switch 2 trailer included brief glimpses of the new game, with more information to be shared later this year. The anticipation for this latest addition to the Mario Kart series is palpable. However, it’s hard not to feel a bit let down that, despite being on its ninth iteration, Mario Kart has had more sequels than the arguably superior racing game from the Nintendo 64 era, which never received a follow-up.

The game being discussed is actually “Diddy Kong Racing,” a popular title released by Rare in 1997, which is still considered the most genuine competitor to the kart-racing genre dominated by Mario’s series.

If you haven’t encountered it before, “Diddy Kong Racing” is a go-kart racing game that was initially launched for the Nintendo 64 (later reappeared on the Nintendo DS) and primarily features Diddy Kong, who is often Donkey Kong’s sidekick. However, it’s important to note that Diddy Kong is simply one of the characters you can play in the game, and the broader universe of Donkey Kong doesn’t significantly influence the actual gameplay.

Despite not managing to expand into a franchise as expansive as Mario Kart, it’s important to note that Diddy Kong Racing is still a fantastic game. However, the fate of Rare and its creations has been complex. After being acquired by Microsoft, many original titles have seen limited continuation since.

Apart from the Donkey Kong series characters, it’s worth noting that Diddy Kong, Banjo the bear with a backpack, and Conker the chatty squirrel first appeared in Diddy Kong Racing. These three were among the playable racers in the game. Over time, these characters became the stars of their own games, which are still cherished by N64 enthusiasts today. Titles like Banjo-Kazooie, Banjo-Tooie, and Conker’s Bad Fur Day hold a special place among longtime N64 fans, and it all started with Diddy Kong Racing.

Instead of primarily serving as a platform for extraordinary Rare characters, “Diddy Kong Racing” is essentially a groundbreaking kart racing game. Unlike “Mario Kart,” “Diddy Kong Racing” successfully combined traditional kart racing with aspects of a 3D platformer, resulting in something distinctive and unique at the time.

As a passionate gamer, I’m immersed in an exhilarating journey where I’m the star! The adventure commences by dropping me into a vast, open-world landscape, straddling a nimble go-kart. My mission: to traverse this expansive world, seeking out arenas where I can engage in thrilling races. Reminiscent of timeless classics like Banjo-Kazooie and Super Mario 64, my progression is fueled by the collection of tokens, specifically balloons in this case, which I earn by triumphing over levels. These tokens serve as the keys to unlocking doors to increasingly challenging worlds. The races are organized into sets, each set occupying its distinctive universe, all leading up to a climactic boss race.

In “Diddy Kong Racing”, the game design skillfully eliminated monotony, with each new race series transporting you to entirely distinct locations. You begin by racing through a dinosaur-filled prehistoric world, then move on to a snowy track for another challenge. The introduction of bosses transforms them into characters within a storyline, rather than just opponents you need to beat in a race. Each boss has their unique voice, motivation, and skill set that distinguishes them from the others. In other words, each boss is uniquely memorable, much like they would be in a typical 3D platformer game.

To add a twist to things, Diddy Kong Racing introduces multiple types of vehicles, such as planes and hovercrafts alongside the typical karts. Consequently, this variety provides distinct experiences across every track, ensuring the game remains engaging as you delve into its various offerings.

It’s clear why there hasn’t been a sequel for “Diddy Kong Racing,” but that doesn’t make it any less disheartening. Given that the “Mario Kart” series has produced nine mainline games, most of which have maintained the original racing formula, it’s unfortunate that we haven’t had an opportunity to delve into more innovative aspects that a potential sequel for “Diddy Kong Racing” might have introduced.
