A fresh installment of Mario Kart is coming to Nintendo Switch 2, marking a significant gap in time since we last saw a brand-new iteration. Although the Nintendo Switch already hosts a version of Mario Kart, it’s essentially an adaptation from the original game released on Wii U in 2014, named Mario Kart 8. The 2017 variant, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, did offer additional content and updates post-release, but it has been more than a decade since we’ve seen a brand-new Mario Kart game developed from the ground up. Fortunately, our wait will soon be over as Nintendo hinted at a new Mario Kart game during their announcement of the Nintendo Switch 2.
In the initial reveal during the Nintendo Switch 2 Direct, they unveiled the first trailer for what seems to be an expansive version of Mario Kart called “Mario Kart Open-World”. This game offers a vast, explorable environment where you can drive freely between races, discovering new paths, delving into the world with companions, and snapping photos. Notably, Mario Kart Open-World incorporates a dynamic weather system that alters track conditions; for instance, rain will make surfaces slippery and driving challenging. The release of Mario Kart Open-World is synchronized with the launch of the Nintendo Switch 2.
