During a question-and-answer session for investors, Nintendo’s president Shuntaro Furukawa discussed both the upcoming Switch 2 and the original Switch. It appears that the primary motivation behind developing the Switch 2 is to give game developers access to improved hardware. (GamesRadar’s reporting)
Discussing the possibility that the Switch 2 might be an interim console release before a more innovative model, Furukawa explained Nintendo’s decision-making process regarding the upcoming console. He mentioned that providing fresh gaming experiences was one of the main motivations behind the development of the new hardware.
For nearly a decade and still ongoing, it’s essential to boost hardware processing power so software developers can deliver unique gaming experiences, as emphasized by Nintendo. So, this time around, we opted for hardware with improved processing abilities. We think that the new games, Mario Kart World and Donkey Kong Bananza, will provide novel gameplay experiences that were previously unattainable on the Nintendo Switch.
In addition, Furukawa discussed the future direction of their game development, aiming to establish the forthcoming Switch 2 as the new benchmark in terms of hardware quality, both for developers and consumers, as delivered by the company.
Moving ahead, we plan to create numerous innovative games tailored for the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 platform, offering unique gaming experiences. Our goal is to establish Nintendo Switch 2 as the benchmark for Nintendo Switch devices, consistently delivering fresh and exciting experiences to our customers.
During the same question-and-answer session, Furukawa mentioned that the company aims to sell 15 million units of the Switch 2. He further explained that the cautious prediction for the new console is mainly due to its higher price, which could potentially present challenges when trying to reach a larger player base due to increased barriers to entry.
Furukawa stated that we anticipate selling 15 million units of the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 within this fiscal year. This projection is based on a goal similar to the sales of the original Nintendo Switch during the ten-month span from its release in March 2017 up until the end of December that same year.
Given that the Switch 2 costs more than the initial Switch model, it’s clear that there may be significant challenges in getting many people to buy this console when it first comes out,” he explained further.
As Nintendo prepares for the June 5 debut of its new console, it’s also emphasized in their latest financial report that they will carry on providing additional game releases for the original Switch. Some of the games set to be released for the older model include Pokemon Legends: Z-A, Metroid Prime 4: Beyond, Rhythm Heaven Groove, Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream, and Pokemon Champions.
The company has mentioned that the potential cost of the Switch 2 could increase due to the impact of U.S. tariffs on imported items in the future.
