The well-recognized actor, Mark Withers, who gained fame through his roles in shows like the original ’80s hit series “Dynasty”, has sadly passed away at the age of 77.
The actor sadly died following a fight against pancreatic cancer, as confirmed by his daughter, Jessie Withers, in an interview with Variety on December 6th.
In her statement to the media, she expressed that he faced his health challenges with the same robustness and grace he displayed in his work. His career left behind a lasting impression of kindness, wit, and commitment, as well as an exceptional talent for making each performance truly memorable.
Jessie went on to say, “Mark’s exceptional skill and devotion to his profession will long be cherished by his peers, companions, and admirers.
Mark, who hails from Binghamton, New York, kicked off his acting career on-screen during the 1970s. He secured roles in advertisements and series like “How the West Was Won”, “Kaz”, and “Wonder Woman”.
In 1981, he first appeared on the popular series “Dynasty”, portraying Ted Dinard, a role that marked his breakthrough. This character was the romantic partner of Steven Carrington, played by Al Corley. They were among the earliest LGBTQ+ characters to appear on American TV without sensationalism, as Withers himself described it, and they debuted during the show’s initial season.
During the 1980s, Withers made appearances in various popular TV series including Magnum P.I., The Dukes of Hazzard, Remington Steele, Hillstreet Blues, Days of Our Lives, and Dallas – a primetime soap opera that came before Dynasty.
In the 2000s, following a long hiatus from acting in the 1990s, he landed roles in popular sitcoms like Frasier and The King of Queens.
For about ten years, Withers has been featured on programs like “Drop Dead Diva”, “True Blood”, “Castle” and the ’80s-centric series “Stranger Things”. In this show, he portrayed Gary, a coroner from the morgue in the town of Hawkins.
Withers looked back on his mostly TV acting career fondly.
“You could pursue fame and fortune, but I didn’t. To be honest, I would have enjoyed a bit more fame, but when I reflect on my career and the incredible people I’ve worked with, I’m truly amazed. I consider myself quite fortunate to have been an actor.
In addition to Jessie, Withers is survived by his wife, Haiyan Liu Withers.
