Following the broadcast of its season 3 finale in two parts, NBC decided to end the revival of this show. This news was met with sadness by long-time fans, particularly since the final episodes boasted notable guest stars like Raegan Revord from Young Sheldon, Simon Helberg from The Big Bang Theory, and Marsha Warfield, an original cast member. The main cast includes Melissa Rauch, John Larroquette, Wendie Malick, Lacretta, and Nyambi Nyambi.
Back in the day, I made my debut on Night Court in 1984, stepping into the shoes of Rosalind ‘Roz’ Russell in season 4, episode 1 titled “The Next Voice You Hear…” Fast forward to more recent times, and I’ve been part of five reboot episodes, with season 2, episode 13 being a special one as it took place during Roz and Loretta’s wedding. Aside from Night Court, you might recognize me from my role as Toni Wilson on ABC’s 9-1-1. Some of my more recent projects include The Upshaws, A Holiday I Do, and Miracles Across 125th Street.
I had a conversation with Marsha Warfield, discussing her role in Night Court during season 3, episode 17; specifically, we talked about Roz’s relationship with Gurgs, as well as her thoughts on potential developments for Roz and Loretta in the future.
Warfield’s Relationship With Lacretta Mirrors Their Night Court Dynamic
“I’m more than willing to be there for her as Roz or Marsha.”
How does Roz feel when she is first given the task of creating a welcome video for the court?
Marsha Warfield implies that Roz responds with “Well, okay” casually and without much effort since it doesn’t require anything from her. In essence, she is saying that Roz agrees to do whatever is asked of her because she is on the job and being paid for her work. However, Roz has a close relationship with Gurgs similar to an auntie and niece, and she respects and cares for Gurgs deeply. Despite this bond, Roz does not believe that Gurgs needs mentoring but is willing to guide her anyway because she wants the best for her.
What thoughts might be going through her mind when Dan enters, sharing his business ideas for the court video and intends to commercialize it?
Marsha Warfield: That’s Dan. He does that. We work around him. He’s going to do Dan stuff.
I really appreciate when Gurgs tells Roz, ‘You embody everything this place stands for.’ I thought that was a lovely sentiment, especially since you were part of the original Night Court cast. What do you think it is about Roz and even Gurgs that embodies the spirit of the show?
Marsha Warfield: Certain aspects aren’t easily measured or felt, but rather experienced. Right from the start, Marsha and Lacretta shared a warm bond, and the same can be said for Roz and Gurgs.
This older/more experienced woman and this younger woman have taken over the role she once held. She supports them wholeheartedly and wishes them nothing but success. If they ever need me, advice, encouragement, or simply a reassuring word like, “You can do it!”, I’m ready to step up as Roz or Marsha.
Warfield Was Pleasantly Surprised By Roz’s Coming Out In The Night Court Reboot
“She had a wedding among her friends and colleagues, and it was nice and not exploitative, or the butt of a joke.”
From what we’ve caught a brief look at, the welcome video is reportedly four hours long. I wonder what other elements or details might have been included in such an extensive production.
Marsha Warfield: It’s likely that Roz guided everyone through every aspect — the holding areas, each courtroom, the evidence storage rooms, and even had them review the case documents. To top it off, she also treated them to a meal.
Wondering how you suppose the married life is fairing for Roz and Loretta? She didn’t appear in this episode, but I sure hope things are going well between them.
Marsha Warfield: I find them simply delightful as a pair. It seems they’ve built a life together, but inevitably, an event arises that could jeopardize their bond, just like in Night Court.
It’s possible that someone else could be involved due to the fact that Roz isn’t fully trusting her, given her past relationships. Might it be plausible for either of them to catch another’s eye? After all, one never truly knows…
Did you have a specific plotline for character Roz in mind from the original Night Court that you’re eager to develop further in the reboot?
Marsha Warfield: Roz’s revelation. The most wonderful development I could have imagined for Roz is undoubtedly her coming out. And not only did she come out, but it felt like a casual conversation. She had a private wedding with her friends and work associates, which was tasteful and not sensationalized or used as a punchline. I believe they’ve already given me that moment. I found it delightful. I was genuinely surprised and happy about it.
