As a lifelong fan and admirer of Martha Stewart, I must admit that my initial excitement upon hearing about the Netflix documentary was through the roof. However, after watching it and reading her subsequent criticisms, I find myself torn between two sentiments.
I’m thrilled to share that the new Netflix documentary film “Martha” is now streaming! This captivating biography delves into the life and times of the remarkable Martha Stewart, a businesswoman, author, TV personality, and once a billionaire, as told through candid on-camera interviews with her herself. Additionally, it features insightful voice interviews from those who have been close to her at various stages of her extraordinary journey.
Despite her substantial involvement in the film interviews, Stewart has recently voiced criticism towards the documentary. She expressed appreciation for the initial part of it, but found some issues with certain scenes towards the end.
During an interview with the New York Times, Stewart expressed her displeasure about the film’s ending, saying: “The final sequences showing me as an old woman stooped over in the garden were not to my liking. I suggested he cut them out, but he wouldn’t listen. I can’t stand those last scenes at all.
Stewart strongly condemned the film’s director, RJ Cutler, for relying heavily on minimal footage from her own personal collection, labeling this decision as “stunning” and pointing out that her grandchildren were entirely left out of the movie, not even receiving a single reference in it.
Moreover, she also voiced her disapproval towards the movie’s emphasis on the charges of insider trading and the obstruction of justice case that led to her brief imprisonment. Her opinion was clear: “The trial and subsequent short incarceration, spanning less than two years out of an 83-year lifespan, were not significant focal points.
In reality, I viewed it as a break from routine… frankly, the trial was tedious to the point where the judge appeared to doze off. It wasn’t something RJ included, but the judge often seemed to nod off at the bench. Each day, I recorded this in my diary.
Additionally, she mentioned that she instructed Cutler to incorporate rap tunes into the movie, suggesting names like Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, and Fredwreck for inclusion.
“And then he gets some lousy classical score in there, which has nothing to do with me,” she said.
In a brighter aspect, Stewart mentioned that young women have shared with her how the film has instilled in them a strength they were previously unaware of. She appreciates how the documentary effectively portrays a strong female character who bravely endures hardships while achieving significant triumphs.
Previously, Cutler expressed that making the film felt like capturing Martha’s essence as a symbol of her era and a quintessential American success story.
It struck me that she was contemplating sharing her life experiences through some medium, and it wasn’t difficult to envision a biographical film being produced about Martha, delving into the reasons behind her immense cultural and commercial impact over several decades from various aspects.
As I delved into Martha’s background, it grew increasingly evident to me that she was a multifaceted individual riddled with conflicting traits and paradoxes. With each new insight, my curiosity intensified, fueling my anticipation for uncovering further layers of her captivating narrative.
