Hear ye! Hear ye! Archie is back.
Previously, Martha’s ex created quite a scene in Beyond Paradise. Initially, he made an attempt to kiss her, hoping to reignite their relationship, but this advance was swiftly rejected when she gave him a sharp slap.
Later on, he found himself in a highly-visible struggle with Humphrey, who was tired of his interference, leading him to take action.
Afterward, it seemed Archie wouldn’t visit Humphrey and Martha again, as he was missing from the second season and the holiday specials.
It wasn’t likely we’d see him returning, as you might imagine. He was sold from The Ten Mile Kitchen by Martha, making any kind of friendship quite unlikely.
Despite not being seen for some time, it was possible he could return since he had a vineyard locally. As predicted, this came true when he made his comeback in the premiere of season 3.
Not long after Anne’s unfortunate incident, I found myself unexpectedly at Martha’s recently opened seaside eatery. It seemed serendipitous, really, until he mentioned his predicament – his caterers for the grand opening of his new winery had backed out at the eleventh hour, and it appeared my name was somehow attached to this last-minute scramble.
And rather controversially, after minimal pushback, she agreed.
It’s worth noting that Archie suggested this could be beneficial for both of them business-wise since his 40 potential clients would also be your 40 potential clients. However, considering the turmoil he caused during his previous visit to Shipton Abbott, it might not be the best timing.
In my humble opinion, it’s essential to highlight that Archie wasn’t casually asking Martha for a favor. He didn’t just need her to pick up a package or lend a spoonful of sugar. Instead, he requested something much more substantial – preparing a full feast, all at the last minute! To make matters worse, Martha was juggling her bustling business during a time of significant change. Quite an ask, if you ask me.
However, his previous behavior alone might have been sufficient for Martha to decline, but there was an additional factor: canceling her planned evening out with Humphrey to assist Archie.
In the midst of discussing whether it’s suitable for them to take on another child right now, she voiced worries that their time spent as a couple might be diminished if they added another member to their family. However, when given the chance, she opted for Archie over pursuing another child.
However, though Martha may be overly kind at times, Humphrey displayed exceptional behavior instead.

Upon reaching the police station to inform him about the altered plans, he neither displayed panic nor concealed his emotions through his quirky, awkward laughter.
Instead, the detective openly expressed his emotions and surprisingly remained composed even in the face of troubling information that could have caused instability.
“Are you mad?” she asked.
He replied, ‘Not at the moment, but later on, definitely.’ He explained that he declined initially as he appreciated your kindness and had agreed to assist if possible. However, he was excited about the upcoming date.
Humphrey agreed to go to Archie‘s wine launch event, perhaps using it as an opportunity to monitor Martha’s vineyard owner, given their past tension. It’s clear that old resentments persist between them, as demonstrated when Humphrey struck Archie during a staged confrontation.
Despite a minor setback, it became evident that Humphrey underwent significant personal development and fully trusted Martha during this period, solidifying their bond.
In my opinion, the second season finale left us all on tenterhooks regarding the fate of our beloved couple, but fear not! They’ve managed to navigate the rocky shores of their relationship and find themselves standing firmly on solid ground. The one obstacle that threatened to tear them asunder – their inability to conceive naturally – has been overcome, demonstrating their unwavering commitment to each other. This rollercoaster ride of a love story is truly something to behold!
However, they didn’t wait for each other, instead, they made their choice mutual. This decision has only strengthened their bond, keeping it as resilient as ever.
Indeed, they’ve experienced their share of highs and lows, but their strong connection is endearing to many. It’s reassuring, and Humphrey, with his charming and affectionate nature, seems disheartening when distressed, a sight I believe most people wouldn’t relish.
Kris Marshall noted that despite facing some difficulties, this pair stands out as a rare kind of leading couple because they don’t have huge scandals or dramatic infidelities.
He mentioned, “They’re delightful companions to hang out with.” They’re both unique and imperfect, far from the polished perfection often found on social media. Instead, they exude genuine warmth and friendship, showing a deep, unspoken love for one another.
Additionally, it’s rather unusual for a drama not to be dramatic but still enjoyable, making the characters pleasant company. In my opinion, this is something we can truly be proud of.
