Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra Reveals New Details on Wakanda

As a lifelong fan who’s grown up with Marvel comics and movies, I can hardly contain my excitement about the upcoming game, Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra. The collaboration between Skydance and Marvel Games promises an immersive experience, particularly with the inclusion of Wakanda in a World War II setting.

The realm of Wakanda expands further, as confirmed by the ongoing production of Black Panther 3 for cinema screens. On the gaming front, an exhilarating development unfolds. In a recent conversation with Entertainment Weekly, Skydance and Marvel Games shared intriguing insights into their joint project, Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra. They unveiled fascinating aspects about how Wakanda is integrated within the game’s narrative. Skydance New Media director and celebrated writer Amy Hennig outlined the strategic placement of the secretive nation in a World War II backdrop, introducing an engaging ensemble of new characters.

The former Naughty Dog director expressed her vision for players by reinforcing the notion that the dense foliage of Wakanda and Occupied Paris, two “key” destinations in the title, are vastly different. The Uncharted series writer revealed: “Wakanda at this point in time is hidden away from the outside world and protected by this impenetrable jungle.”

In this scenario, the land of Wakanda is ruled by T’Challa’s grandfather Azzuri instead, taking on the role traditionally held by T’Challa as Black Panther. Known for his role in “The Walking Dead,” Khary Payton plays this character, forming an alliance with Captain America, portrayed by Drew Moerlein from “Horizon Forbidden West.” This is quite unlike the strained relationship we saw between these characters in Marvel Studios’ “Captain America: Civil War.” In this instance, they join forces to combat a shared enemy: Nazis, marking a notable departure from their past conflicts.

In the midst of major battles on snow-covered Paris under occupation, the lush Wakandan jungles serve as an effortless shift to a distinctly different setting. As Hennig points out, this change of surroundings is vital because it immerses players and highlights the contrasting realms inhabited by Captain America and Azzuri – one overrun by Nazis and another hidden from view.

Just as Marvel Studios’ initial Black Panther film portrayed Wakanda as secretive, this land remains concealed from public view. However, it remains to be seen for how long this will continue. The director of Skydance New Media described Wakanda’s clandestine position during World War II by stating, “Although they prefer non-intervention, events unfold that force them into the fray. They must safeguard their own interests. The world is becoming increasingly smaller. There are no satellites yet, but there will be soon. You can bring down planes attempting to fly over Wakanda, but for how long can they remain hidden?

In addition to Black Panther, another character hailing from Wakanda will make an appearance in the game. This new character is named Nanali, who serves as a spy stationed in Paris under occupation. She’s slated to be one of the four playable characters in different parts of Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra, utilizing her expertise in stealth and infiltration tactics.
