As a seasoned gamer with a soft spot for comic book lore, I can’t help but feel a thrill of anticipation as I dive into the latest developments in the Venom universe. The new All-New Venom series by Al Ewing and Carlos Gomez promises to be a return to the gritty, street-level roots of everyone’s favorite symbiote, with a mystery character lurking beneath the gooey suit.
As a die-hard fan, I’m thrilled to share that a fresh Venom saga is unfolding, stemming from the tumultuous father-son confrontation between Eddie and Dylan Brock in the Venom War. This intriguing narrative is being crafted by current Venom architect Al Ewing, who has placed Eddie Brock and Dylan Brock on opposing paths, each convinced that the other is responsible for a looming, nightmarish future. Interestingly, neither character currently wields the Klyntar symbiote; instead, it has reconnected with Spider-Man in the opening issue of Venom War. However, it seems that our friendly neighborhood wall-crawler won’t be retaining the symbiote, as Marvel has officially announced All-New Venom (as reported by Polygon).
In contrast to Al Ewing’s previous Venom series, which delved into time-travel and cosmic adventures, the new title All-New Venom will offer a street-level comic experience with an unidentified character donning the gooey symbiote suit. Marvel fans might recognize some of the potential candidates for this role: Rick Jones, Madame Masque, Robbie Robertson, and Luke Cage. The true identity remains a secret at this time.
Venom returns to his street-level roots
In his own words, Ewing described All-New Venom as something that would appeal to those seeking a change from the ordinary. He likened it to an extraordinary tale, similar to a Spider-Man story. The setting is familiar, being Earth and New York City, with locations depicted in the story being typical places one could visit in the city. However, when they venture into a warehouse, Ewing admits to using real warehouses as inspiration but modifying them just enough to avoid legal issues. Essentially, he’s saying that every location in this story is a realistic place you could find in New York City.
Let’s shift focus from grand cosmic adventures and dive into a more personal, character-driven story instead. This tale will still include the thrilling street-level antics typical of superheroes, such as web-slinging, chain-swinging, and even some Venom-like scenes. It’s a throwback to classic superhero comics, but with unique twists that we’ll have fun incorporating, focusing more on the action happening right here on Earth rather than cosmic battles or time-bending mysteries.
All-New Venom’s four host candidates
About Rick Jones, Ewing commented, “It’s refreshing to pen a character like Rick who has been through a lot and emerged on the other side. This new version of Rick is more relaxed, humorously jovial, and quick-witted – quite different from the Rick I’ve written before. Whether he’s still going through challenges… only time will tell if he’s dealing with something else now.”
Afterward, we focus on Madame Masque as another likely culprit. Having just emerged from the Gang War, she was previously connected to Spider-Man. It’s uncertain whether her intentions involve taking control of a symbiote or seeking revenge against rival gangs using an unsuspected identity. As for the mystery surrounding her next move as Madame Masque, I’m afraid I can’t provide any insights… stated Ewing.
As a gamer, I find myself resonating with Robbie Robertson, another character who’s been impacted by the chaos of the Gang War and Spidey. Unlike others, he’s always managed to resist the allure of power or superpowers. But now, his son’s deep involvement in New York’s criminal underworld and his romantic entanglement with the Beetle have stirred something within him. Is he contemplating a way to regain control that his journalistic role can’t provide? Could Robbie Robertson be another secret identity, like Clark Kent, navigating the world of news while also dealing with trouble behind the scenes?
Lastly, we have Mayor Luke Cage posing an intriguing question: “Heroes sometimes use symbiotes to enhance their abilities. Luke Cage has found it challenging to serve the community while being tied to his mayoral duties. Might a symbiote offer a solution? Could this provide him with another persona, enabling him to handle business as usual, but with a twist? He wouldn’t have to address questions about his street-level activities if he were to don this new identity. A symbiote could potentially serve as a disguise for him. Again, it’s all speculation… I’m merely exploring ideas.”
