As a lifelong Marvel fan who has followed the adventures of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes since I was a young boy flipping through those yellowing comic books under my bedsheets with a flashlight, I must say that this 85th Anniversary celebration hits close to home for me. It feels like we’re celebrating not just Marvel Comics, but a part of our collective childhood, a piece of pop culture history that has shaped so many lives.
85 years ago, Marvel Comics was born as Timely Comics under Martin Goodman’s leadership, later evolving into Atlas Comics and finally adopting its current name in 1961. The story of Marvel began with the creation of The Fantastic Four and other legendary titles by Stan Lee, Jack Kirby, Steve Ditko, and others. To mark this significant milestone, Marvel Studios shared a touching video on social media, featuring vintage footage of Lee and interviews with actors from the Marvel Cinematic Universe. This heartfelt tribute is sure to bring joy to any Marvel enthusiast’s heart.
This video is a salute to Marvel Comics and showcases scenes from upcoming films like Thunderbolts and Captain America: Brave New World. It also features snippets of Charlie Cox’s Daredevil, discussions with Tom Hiddleston and Angela Bassett, a reference to X-Men: The Animated Series, and much more. Marvel Studios captioned the post as “Celebrating 85 years of Marvel, thanks to you, True Believers,” which you can view below.
Marvel’s 85th Anniversary Variants Pay Tribute to Classic Comic Covers:
Last month, it was revealed that Marvel would be celebrating its 85th anniversary with some special variant covers. They revealed a new series of variant covers paying tribute to the original Marvel Comics (retitled Marvel Mystery Comics with issue #2). The homage covers recreate key issues of the Timely-published Captain America Comics, All-Winners Comics, and Sub-Mariner Comics. You can glimpse them on new issues of Fantastic Four, Amazing Spider-Man, Venom, Incredible Hulk, and the newly-relaunched X-Men.
“Over five different editions, several popular artists like Elizabeth Torque, David Yardin, Paco Medina, Joelle Jones, and Jan Bazaldua are paying tribute to industry legends by reinterpreting their artwork. These new creations showcase both timeless characters and modern icons, giving a fresh twist to classic covers from the early days of Marvel Comics, such as Marvel Comics #1 from 1939, which significantly impacted pop culture history,” states Marvel.com. Here are the release dates:
