Marvel Champions Retires Two Major Heroes and Addresses Future Returns

Marvel Champions keeps growing, introducing additional beloved Marvel characters to the game, a trend that shows no signs of slowing down. However, there’s some less thrilling information that fans might find disappointing, shared during Fantasy Flight Games’ latest Fireside Chat. The concern had been brewing that certain out-of-stock heroes wouldn’t be reprinted, and indeed, FFG confirmed this fear: Captain America and Doctor Strange have officially been discontinued and are no longer in production. At this time, it appears they won’t make a comeback in their current form.

Retired products can no longer be bought. This means that any storylines (scenarios), cards, or characters from those retired products won’t be for sale either. However, these retired items will now belong to what Fantasy Flight Games (FFG) is referring to as the Legacy environment. The positive aspect is that future releases will work seamlessly with products within the Legacy environment.

This leads us to what’s known as the “Present Era,” encompassing items launched within the last 2 to 3 years. However, it’s important to note that this boundary can be flexible. If a product gains significant popularity and remains in high demand, it will continue to be produced and considered part of the current era.

Additionally, it’s worth noting that some earlier versions of the game may contain cards that are reused in later editions. If a card from an out-of-print, retired product is crucial to the game as a whole, Fantasy Flight Games might choose to reprint those specific cards.

When asked about the potential return of certain characters or products in the future, it’s possible, but not as a simple reissue. Senior Game Designer Tony Fanchi hinted at the possibility of revisiting iconic figures like Captain America and Doctor Strange, but any revamped versions won’t be just minor adjustments. Instead, they aim to provide a fresh, engaging experience with these characters, ensuring that long-term players find it appealing to bring them back into gameplay even if they haven’t played the original versions for years due to subsequent updates or releases.

Fantasy Flight considers various benefits in this system, such as retiring cards that are too powerful or superior (above the curve) and enhancing underperforming cards from previous releases. They also hint at the ability to revamp these subpar cards. Additionally, they discussed that new scenarios for current and upcoming products won’t face the ongoing challenge of increasing difficulty due to having to accommodate every release since the game’s inception.

They concluded the conversation by mentioning that if you’re interested in some older versions of certain releases, it would be wise to grab them sooner rather than later, as they might eventually become both out-of-print and unavailable at retail stores. While there could potentially be alternate versions of Captain America and Doctor Strange in the future, you may want to purchase the original ones now if you’ve been holding off on adding them to your collection.
