As a seasoned comic book enthusiast who has witnessed the rise and fall of various superhero teams, I must admit that the impending demise of the Fantastic Four in Marvel’s “Fantastic Three” is a bitter-sweet pill to swallow. The Thing, Mr. Fantastic, Invisible Woman, and the Human Torch have been an integral part of my comic book journey since childhood, and their absence will undoubtedly leave a void that may never be filled.
Next year, the strength of the Fantastic Four is expected to encounter a significant obstacle, and Marvel isn’t hiding this fact. This weekend, the cover for Fantastic Four #30 was unveiled, depicting Doom standing over a fallen Ben Grimm (The Thing), with debris suggesting that he has been defeated. The title itself reads “Fantastic Three,” indicating a member is missing from the team.
Issue #30 of Fantastic Four is a part of the upcoming event “One World Under Doom” that Marvel Comics has been hyping up. Last week, they revealed the cover art for “One World Under Doom” #2, which suggests The Thing is under Doom’s control. We might see this transformation on the cover of Fantastic Four #30 by Joshua Cassara. This change isn’t temporary as it promises to reshape Marvel’s First Family significantly and potentially for a long time ahead.
I’m thrilled to be part of the anticipation for the epic event, “One World Under Doom“, which unfolds in the wake of the events from “Bloodhunt“. As Victor von Doom ascends to the power of the Sorcerer Supreme, this title makes its grand entrance on shelves on February 12, 2025. Comics like “Fantastic Four, Storm, X-Factor, Doom Academy, Iron Man, Red Hulk“, and “Thunderbolts” will carry tie-in issues to deepen the narrative. Spanning across nine issues, this storyline may extend its influence into uncharted territories of the Marvel universe, promising an expansive and thrilling journey!
Writer Ryan North is responsible for creating this event, as well as penning the monthly issues of Fantastic Four. In a statement released by Marvel, he expressed that “ONE WORLD UNDER DOOM” is a story he has been developing since 2023. Having such an early start on the project allows him to ensure the plotlines are cohesive and gives other artists working on related tie-ins the opportunity to work from completed scripts rather than just ideas. He is thrilled with how the story has progressed so far, and anticipates where it will go next. It’s been fascinating to hear about the plans of other creative teams for their books in response to this new status quo—we’re all moving forward together.
The early release date of “Fantastic Four: First Steps” offers a fantastic opportunity for publicity, with promotional materials being released months ahead. This wide-ranging collaboration is an excellent chance to attract new or returning readers, especially since the Fantastic Four are set to appear in the Marvel Cinematic Universe for the first time in 2025. “Fantastic Four: First Steps” will premiere on July 25, while “One World Under Doom” kicks off on February 12, with the latter being well underway by the time of the former’s release.
