As a seasoned gamer of Marvel comics spanning decades, I can’t help but feel a pang of nostalgia as Tony Stark, aka Iron Man, seemingly met his end in the latest issue of The Ultimates. The Ultimate Universe has always been a fascinating spin-off, and watching its heroes evolve has been an exciting journey.
In the final issue of The Ultimates, it seems that one of the Avengers, Tony Stark (Iron Man), has perished, but given the unpredictable nature of comic book deaths, we can’t be completely certain if he’s truly gone. With Tony Stark leading the team, the Avengers of the Ultimate Universe were put together to combat The Maker and his sinister council. They had assembled a powerful group that included America Chavez, She-Hulk, and Hawkeye. However, during their mission against Hulk and the Immortal Weapons, Tony Stark ended up dead in the arms of She-Hulk. Yet, it’s worth pondering if this is indeed a genuine death or just a clever trick being played out.
In a recent development, Marvel unveiled a sneak peek at issue #7 of The Ultimates, penned by Deniz Camp, Juan Frigeri, and Federico Blee. The narrative resumes following the defeat of the Ultimates on the battlefield, with Captain America and the Human Torch referring to Tony Stark in the past. As veterans from a different era, they both understand the vast transformations that have occurred since their previous timeline. Jim Hammond seems to have adapted reasonably well to the present, while Steve Rogers continues to adapt. However, the looming question is who will assume command of the Ultimates following Tony Stark’s demise. The Human Torch suggests Captain America should be the one.
Marvel teases The Ultimates’ new leader
As a gamer, I can’t help but feel the sting of loss as Tony Stark, the Iron Avenger, fell in battle. Even veterans like Captain America and Human Torch have seen comrades fall during war, but this is uncharted territory for the newbies on our Ultimates team. Death touches us all differently. It remains to be seen how we’ll pick up the pieces after Tony’s demise, but it’s on Captain America to rally us and prepare us for our next fight.
In essence, Tony Stark, previously at the helm for recruitment and leadership within the Ultimates, has largely shouldered these responsibilities. With his departure, it falls upon Captain America to step up as the most likely successor, steering them towards victory. Given that Doom/Reed Richards are not in a suitable frame of mind to lead, and no one else on the Ultimates possesses the required experience, this transition becomes increasingly crucial. As we approach the second year of the Ultimate Universe and an impending clash with Maker, the Ultimates need to be more united than ever before.
In the seventh issue of Ultimates, we embark on a fresh narrative! This is an ideal starting point for those just joining the series. Following the shocking events of the previous issue, one key member has vanished. Witness the Ultimates as they reconvene in their covert headquarters and initiate their groundbreaking new scheme to reshape the world!
Ultimates #7 goes on sale Wednesday, December 4th. The preview of the issue can be found below.
