Marvel Cut an Important Sentry Line From Thunderbolts’ Ending (& It Changes Everything)

Attention: Contains possible spoilers for Thunderbolts! Actor Lewis Pullman recently shared a fascinating piece of dialogue that didn’t make it into the final cut of Thunderbolts, offering insight into his character Bob’s ending. This line was intended to be spoken during the resolution phase, just before the Thunderbolts fell into Valentina’s trap and were rebranded as The New Avengers. According to Pullman, Bob would have questioned his teammates, “Anyone here can fly, or do you all just hit and shoot?” This dialogue was meant to add to the mystery surrounding Bob’s mental status and memory issues, but the filmmakers opted for a more enigmatic ending instead. This omission could hint at what lies ahead for Bob in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

In an interview with Josh Horowitz for the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Pullman recounted, “There was a moment in our walk where we almost triggered Valentina’s booby trap. I jokingly asked Yelena, ‘By the way, can any of you fly, or do you all just fight by punching and shooting?'” Pullman later mentioned that this line was removed because it might have been too explicit a reference to something he had personally experienced.

In simpler terms, Pullman explained that they wanted to express a feeling of puzzlement, as if someone was saying, “Hold on, I can see fragments of recollections here.” This same perplexity seems to be the aim in the final edit. When shooting the scene where everyone applauds at the end, there was debate about what Bob should do – either accept the applause or join in with everyone else. The team decided that it would make the most sense for him to react as if he were thinking, “Clearly they’re not acknowledging me. It’s amazing just to be a part of this thrilling event!

The actor pointed out that he’s walking on eggshells due to Marvel Studios’ tight secrecy rules and nondisclosure agreements. After accepting his role, he admitted he hadn’t even seen the whole script. He also made it clear that while he doesn’t know for sure what’s in store for Bob in the MCU, he has plenty of dreams and concepts for the character.

As a die-hard comic book fan, I’ve always been intrigued by the complex character development of Bob, particularly in the Marvel Universe. In the comics, his memories and psychological state are delved into more deeply, painting a picture of his powers as an extension of mental illness and addiction. However, in the Thunderbolts series, this aspect takes on a supernatural twist, portraying it as a manifestation of his mental struggles.

Interestingly, it’s suggested that Bob is unable to tap into his powers, but what remains unclear is whether he recalls being Sentry or the Void consciously. This ambiguity could be a strategic move by the MCU creators, or perhaps they plan to shed more light on this aspect in future instalments.

First Steps” in theaters on July 25th. Additionally, there are several Marvel Cinematic Universe shows set to premiere on Disney+ before then. As of now, “Thunderbolts” is currently playing in theaters.
