A significant shift is underway in Marvel‘s television realm. The Marvel Cinematic Universe ventured into TV for the first time in 2021 with the release of “WandaVision” on Disney+. Up until now, these shows have primarily functioned as self-contained miniseries, either introducing new characters to the MCU or delving into specific periods that complement the film series’ narrative. However, the focus is changing now, as Marvel Television aims to develop TV projects with a more long-term approach.
Discussing Daredevil: Born Again with ComicBook, Marvel Television’s head, Brad Winderbaum, shared insights into the future direction of their TV series lineup.
In the future, our focus has been reoriented, Winderbaum shared with us. We’re creating series that can be released annually, similar to TV programming.
Winderbaum further discussed the change in Marvel’s strategy towards television production. Nowadays, numerous projects are underway, but they won’t be approved unless they can maintain continuity across multiple seasons. This is a significant departure from the old approach, which primarily used TV shows to introduce characters and storylines for upcoming films.
As a dedicated fan, I must admit that we’ve found ourselves penning down more ideas than actually materializing them. We’re returning to a classic TV format, which feels unique given our identity as Marvel Studios. This shift brings a certain level of intensity since we’re under the magnifying glass. Consequently, rumors swirl and projects in development receive heightened interest compared to an ordinary TV studio working on other content. However, rest assured that we won’t produce anything until it’s fully ready, and we’ll strive to create series that can maintain quality across multiple seasons. This commitment will be our guiding principle.
In my perspective as a supporter, I’d like to emphasize that unlike the conventional television approach, Marvel Television is steering clear of the pilot episode phase. This traditional method, where studios evaluate cast chemistry and show potential, often leads to adjustments such as reworking scripts or recasting key roles before production continues. However, Marvel Television seems to be opting for a different strategy, skipping this phase altogether.
Winderbaum clarified that we won’t produce individual pilot episodes as a trial for the series, but we might film the initial episode ahead of time to allow us flexibility in making changes if there are any creative adjustments needed.
The Daredevil: Born Again series, consisting of 18 episodes as of now, may potentially extend beyond that point without any obstacles. This upcoming show, boasting an existing fanbase, appears to serve as a trailblazer for the way Marvel Television might manage other series in the future.
