Marvel Executive Dave Bushore Exits After 15 Years

As a long-time Marvel fan who has witnessed the evolution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) from the sidelines, I must admit that Dave Bushore‘s departure from Marvel Studios feels a bit like Tony Stark bidding farewell to his Iron Man suit – heartbreaking yet inevitable. With 15 years under his belt and an impressive portfolio of projects spanning home entertainment, television specials, parks development, and the franchise team, Bushore has been instrumental in shaping the MCU we know and love today.

After a 15-year tenure, Dave Bushore, a longstanding Marvel executive, has decided to part ways with the company. As reported by The Hollywood Reporter, Bushore, who held the position of Vice President for Franchise Creative and Immersive Development at Marvel, is not joining another company but intends to utilize his expertise in technology and innovative audience engagement to explore new opportunities in a different context, focusing on the intersection between technology and audience participation with favorite brands.

Bushore stated, “I’ll miss the camaraderie, the personalities, and the brainstorming sessions that happen in the halls. Marvel Studios is an exceptional place for such interactions, it’s invigorating. However, I’m eager to channel this energy and innovative thinking towards fresh narratives elsewhere.

Initially, Bushore started working with Marvel back in 2009 as a coordinator under Brad Winderbaum. Since then, he has delved into various sectors within Marvel, including home entertainment, television specials, park development, and the team handling unique projects beyond theatrical production. Notably, Bushore recently took on the roles of director and executive producer for What if…? — An Immersive Story, a collaboration between Marvel and ILM for Apple Vision Pro. This project won an Emmy for exceptional innovation in emerging media, marking a significant milestone as it was also showcased at the Venice International Film Festival, marking Marvel’s debut at this prestigious event. Bushore described this experience as “overwhelmingly amazing.

Bushore found it astonishing to be invited to Venice, but being present and witnessing the acceptance of this innovative content, as well as the participation of filmmakers, ambassadors, and attendees, was an incredibly exciting experience,” (paraphrased sentence)

In simpler terms, “What If…? An Immersive Story” is a reinterpretation of events from the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) in creative ways. By leveraging the advanced technology of Apple Vision Pro, this interactive story will offer fans an innovative and captivating experience that alters their surroundings. As they move through stunning environments, they’ll transition between mixed and virtual reality, exploring new and iconic MCU locations. Fans will engage with their surroundings using their hands and eyes, fully immersed in visually stunning scenes and spatial audio. Their goal is to prevent the fate of reality while embarking on this narrative adventure. Essentially, this experience demonstrates that time, space, and reality aren’t just a straight line.

Titled “What If…? – An Immersive Journey“, this story is helmed by director Dave Bushore at Marvel Studios, while Shereif M. Fattouh takes on the producer role at ILM Immersive. The narrative is penned by David Dong and Phil McCarty, known for their work on “The Learning Curve“, with music composed by Laura Karpman, an Academy Award nominee and Emmy winner, who has worked on scores for movies like “American Fiction” and “The Marvels“. The executive producers for this project include Bushore, Fattouh, Brad Winderbaum, known for his work on “What If…?” and “X-Men ’97“, and several other key figures: Vicki Dobbs Beck, VP of immersive content at Lucasfilm and ILM Immersive; Mark S. Miller, VP of creative development and production at ILM Immersive; and Jamie Voris, EVP/Chief Technology Officer at The Walt Disney Studios.
