Marvel fans react as Robert Downey Jr makes shock Avengers return as Doctor Doom

As a devoted cinema enthusiast with a deep-rooted appreciation for the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), I cannot contain my excitement upon hearing the shocking announcement made at San Diego Comic-Con 2024 – Robert Downey Jr, the iconic Iron Man himself, will be stepping into the infamous role of Doctor Doom in the upcoming Avengers films: Avengers: Doomsday (May 2026) and Avengers: Secret Wars (May 2027).

At San Diego Comic-Con 2024 on July 27, Marvel made a shocking announcement during its evening panel: Robert Downey Jr will portray Doctor Doom in the upcoming Avengers movies.

The actor is most recognized for his endearing portrayal of Iron Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. However, he is set to assume the infamous villain’s part in Avengers: Doomsday, scheduled for release in May 2026, and Avengers: Secret Wars, coming out in May 2027.

At Hall H, Downey donned the Doctor Doom mask and costume before a crowd of amazed Marvel spectators, declaring, “A new disguise, but the mission remains the same.”

As a long-time fan of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, I couldn’t contain my excitement when I heard that Joe and Anthony Russo will once again take the reins for the next two Avengers movies. Their direction in Infinity War and Endgame was nothing short of masterful, and I have no doubt that they will bring the same level of excellence to these new projects.

Currently, fans are expressing their reactions to the announcement of Downey’s role as Doctor Doom in the MCU, and many are thrilled at the idea of his return to this film universe.

“Bringing Robert Downey Jr. back as Doctor Doom by Marvel is quite impressive,” someone posted on X. “He truly embodies Marvel. Appappently, he’ll portray a Doctor Doom version of Tony Stark in another realm. I’m really looking forward to it!”

As I sat eagerly in Hall H, I was taken aback when Robert Downey Jr. appeared on stage, surprising us all. With a twinkle in his eye and a mischievous grin, he revealed that he’s coming back to the Marvel Cinematic Universe – but this time as the infamous villain, Doctor Doom. Despite the new mask and ominous role, I can’t help but feel a sense of familiar excitement knowing that RDJ is once again part of the MCU adventure.

One person commented: “Robert Downey Jr’s portrayal of Doctor Doom by Marvel is an exciting choice. The atmosphere is sure to be breathtaking to behold.”

A third person expressed: “Initially, I wasn’t fond of the casting choice. But then, a short while later, I changed my mind and grew excited about Downey as Doom in the MCU. It’s not been that long since he was last here, but I’m already craving his return.”

As a movie critic, I’ve pondered over the recent casting news of Robert Downey Jr. in the upcoming film “Downey’s Doom.” Although no information has been shared on how this role might tie back to his beloved Marvel character, Tony Stark, some fans have raised concerns about the potential impact on the villainous character.

One stated: “I have a strong preference for Doctor Doom as my favorite Marvel villain out of all time. Regarding Iron Man, RDJ does an excellent job portraying Tony Stark, and it’s hard for me to imagine anyone else in that role. However, while I think he’s a skilled actor, I must admit, there were other candidates whom I would have preferred for the part.”

“Downey expressed concern: ‘I fear the studio may overlook Doom’s intricate background if I’m merely cast as Kang. This character is multifaceted, menacingly cool, and wickedly powerful. I truly hope they do him the justice he deserves.'”

Some people held a more negative viewpoint, proposing that introducing a new actor into the Marvel Cinematic Universe at that time could have yielded positive results.

A fan expressed their disappointment by saying: “I’m disappointed. I’m a big fan of Downey, but I would have preferred a less recognized actor for Doom. It might turn out well in the end, but for now, it feels like an unfortunate attempt by Disney to revive what was once great rather than a thoughtful casting choice.”

Later on, Florence Pugh from “Thunderbolts” and who portrays Yelena Belova in the MCU, expressed amazement when she learned about Downey’s unmasking incident on stage as reported by Variety. Her reaction was, “I wasn’t aware of this – I imagine it was quite a scene!”

Florence Pugh is astonished when she witnesses Robert Downey Jr.’s comeback as Victor von Doom: “I’d wager his mind went wild!”
