Caution: Major plot revelations follow! The upcoming episode of Daredevil: Born Again Season 1 may validate a widely-held fan speculation, but it could also reverse one of the most surprising developments yet. Ever since the first episode, fans have been discussing the possibility that Foggy Nelson, Matt Murdock’s best friend and law partner, might still be alive. With various compelling arguments, they suggest ways this could transpire. As the season finale approaches on April 15th, online discussions grow more convinced that Foggy will reappear in some form.
To begin with, it’s important to recognize that many fans anticipate Foggy’s resurrection due to the news that Elden Henson, who portrays him, is set to reappear in Born Again Season 2. This might suggest he’s still alive, but it could also mean his scenes are flashbacks, dream sequences, or illusions. Additionally, there’s a chance for multiverse crossovers given that Season 2 falls within MCU Phase Six, near the end of the Multiverse Saga.
Comic Book Parallels
Despite certain reservations, various theories about how character Foggy might reappear in the narrative can be found online. Notably, a 2006 issue of Daredevil titled “The Secret Life of Foggy Nelson” is frequently cited. Previously, Matt thought his friend perished from a stabbing, as he could sense his heart stopping with his extraordinary abilities. However, in actuality, Foggy managed to survive the attack and, while hospitalized, chose to join the FBI’s witness protection program.
Prior to Marvel enhancing the interest, viewers had been anticipating similarities in this narrative. On March 21st, right between episodes 4 and 5 premieres, the official Daredevil account posted numerous side-by-side comparisons of comic book pages with series scenes, such as Foggy’s demise. This had fans speculating if this was a sign that the show might incorporate more aspects of Foggy’s storyline in future episodes.
In its initial release, ‘The Secret Life of Foggy Nelson’ was issue #88 of Daredevil, yet it marked the 468th issue of the comic book series. Notably, in the season premiere, the address for the law firm Nelson, Murdock, and Page is also 468. Some fans interpret this as an Easter egg, while others remain uncertain.
Regarding the plot, the storyline of “Born Again” deviates significantly from the narrative presented in “The Secret Life of Foggy Nelson”. However, this doesn’t necessarily give us a lot of insight. The Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) rarely follows comic book stories verbatim; instead, it reworks elements to keep viewers engaged. Even the original “Born Again” storyline, which this show takes its name from, isn’t being adapted here. It served as inspiration for “Daredevil” Season 3 on Netflix in a more loose sense.
Although Foggy’s survival isn’t confirmed yet, some elements in the show have sparked speculation among fans as potential hints. One notable similarity between the comic storyline and this series is that both emphasize the pursuit of vigilantes. In the comics, Matt Murdock himself was on trial, while in the show, he’s representing Hector Ayala, known as White Tiger. Additionally, there seems to be a common thread in the villainous figures behind these stories.
In the second-to-last episode, it became clear that Vanessa Fisk had masterminded Foggy’s death. This revelation in the current series echoes the one from the 2006 comic, though the situations were distinct. Whether this similarity is intentional or coincidental, it highlights that we’re still discovering details about Foggy’s demise even deep into the narrative. It suggests that his death wasn’t just a plot device; there seems to be a larger enigma surrounding it, and possibly more hidden truths yet to emerge.
Predictions for Born Again
If Foggy indeed survives as fans speculate, it’s clear that the show’s ending won’t mirror the comics exactly. To foresee such a major twist, we need to take into account the narrative arc the series has been developing. Fans have already come up with some intriguing theories, one of which is that Foggy harbors anger towards Matt and chooses to conceal his survival as a means to distance himself. This notion aligns well with their disagreements in Daredevil Season 3, where Foggy urged Matt to abandon his vigilante lifestyle, while Matt found it difficult to completely let go of it.
Following a similar thought, it’s plausible that Foggy had been watching Matt from afar and saw the moment when his friend decided to abandon vigilantism upon thinking that Foggy was no more. It could be that Foggy continued to hide himself because he felt this was the most effective method to prevent Matt from putting himself in harm’s way. If this scenario is true, there might be less tension between Foggy, but it’s challenging to foresee how Matt would respond to this revelation.
Conversely, within the storyline titled “The Secret Life of Foggy Nelson,” Foggy learns that he can’t revert to his previous life, no matter how much he desires to do so. When he attempts, Foggy is apprehended by The Hand, under Elektra’s command, and informed that they are monitoring him closely and wish for him to remain in concealment. This could potentially be an engaging way to reintroduce The Hand into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, although, at present, there isn’t much concrete proof of this happening.
No matter what the plan unfolds, we’ll find out eventually – perhaps not in the final episode of Daredevil: Born Again Season 1. However, with Season 2 currently being filmed and set to premiere in early 2026, we’ll get a chance to witness the part Henson plays. Until then, tune into Disney+ on April 15th to watch the conclusion of Daredevil: Born Again Season 1.
