Marvel Halloween Special Features First Appearance of MCU Original Character

Oh, boy! As a lifelong Marvel fan with a soft spot for the supernatural and the macabre, this announcement has me absolutely thrilled to the bone! The upcoming “Crypt of Shadows” anthology is like a dream come true, bringing together some of my favorite creepy characters from the MCU in a format reminiscent of classic horror anthologies like “Tales from the Crypt” and “Creepshow”.

This year, the Marvel Universe on screen and in comics is set for a huge supernatural crossover event. Marvel has revealed that their Halloween special, titled “Crypt of Shadows #1″, will be an annual anthology issue showcasing Marvel’s most mystical, monstrous, and frightening characters. This special edition is expected to highlight some supernatural characters from the eerie parts of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Characters like Agatha Harkness (from Agatha All Along), Scarlet Witch (as seen in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness), Blade (featured in Deadpool & Wolverine), and Werewolf and Man-Thing (from the Marvel Studios Special Presentation Werewolf by Night) will all make an appearance.

In a black-and-white TV special, the experienced monster hunter Joshua Jovan, portrayed by Kirk R. Thatcher, was introduced. This seasoned hunter claimed to have 57 confirmed kills during a meeting of the cabal at Ulysses Bloodstone’s funeral (played by Richard Dixon). Regrettably, Jovan didn’t make it through the ritual hunt that determined who would possess a potent supernatural artifact called the Bloodstone. However, the original character will enter the Marvel Comics scene when Crypt of Shadows #1 hits shelves on October 16th, 2024.

On the first issue of “Crypt of Shadows,” Joshua Jovan’s comic book equivalent is showcased on a variant cover illustrated by Juan Ferreyra (known for his work in “Ghost Rider: Final Vengeance”). This special edition can be seen displayed above, while the regular cover (found below) is by Leinil Francis Yu from “Avengers Assemble,” featuring Agatha, Scarlet Witch, Vision, Man-Thing, Werewolf by Night, Blade, Namor, and Kraven.

This comic anthology, similar to “Tales from the Crypt” and “Creepshow”, features a fresh narrative framework. In this case, the witch Agatha Harkness serves as the storyteller, with Steve Orlando (“Scarlet Witch”) crafting the overarching plot, and artist Claire Roe (“Fearless”) bringing it to life visually.

Previously, Benjamin Percy, who wrote ‘Wolverine’, and Rafael Ienco, known for his work on ‘Darth Vader’, teamed up to have Man-Thing square off against Namor the Sub-Mariner in a thrilling confrontation. In another tale by Jason Loo (‘Dazzler’) and Carlos Magno (‘CapWolf’), Kraven the Hunter transforms into Kraven the Monster Hunter, pursuing Jack Russell, the Werewolf by Night, and clashing with Blade the vampire slayer. Lastly, Christopher Condon (of ‘Venom War: Daredevil’) and Djibril Morissette-Phan (‘Moon Knight: Black, White & Blood’) introduce a new character to Marvel comics as Jovan stumbles through the Last Door only to find himself up against his most formidable quarry yet – the Scarlet Witch.

Crypt of Shadows #1 goes on sale Oct. 16th from Marvel Comics.
