Marvel Has Made Professor X a Major Villain  (And We Know Exactly When It Happened)

Over time, Professor Charles Xavier has taken on various roles. He’s the founder of the X-Men, a close ally and adversary to Magneto, a wise, nurturing guide to all mutants, and lately, he’s been portrayed as a villain. Initially, he was a man advocating for peaceful coexistence between mutants and humans. However, in recent years, he has transformed from a strong, albeit imperfect, ethical beacon of the X-Men into someone ready to go to any length to attain his objectives. Some critics argue that Professor X is no longer a hero but an antihero with grandiose ambitions, who believes he knows what’s best and will manipulate others to get what he wants. Numerous stories in recent times support this viewpoint.

Initially, Charles was indeed a genuine hero, always striving for the greater good of all. But a specific storyline set him on a path towards becoming a more morally ambiguous figure. The 2006 comic book “X-Men: Deadly Genesis” marked a significant turning point in Charles’s character development, leading to his transformation into the character we know today.

What is Deadly Genesis?

The six-issue series titled “Deadly Genesis” was published subsequent to the “House of M” comic event, where the Scarlet Witch changed over 90% of Earth’s mutant populace into humans. By its conclusion, Professor X vanished, prompting Cyclops to take over his role as the X-Men embarked on a quest to find him. In “Deadly Genesis,” the insane mutant Vulcan returned to Earth after being marooned on the mutant island Krakoa since the “Second Genesis” storyline in “Giant-Size X-Men.

The story titled “Second Genesis” played a crucial role in elevating the X-Men to comic fame, as it introduced a fresh, diverse squad of X-Men who had to save their original counterparts, who found themselves stranded on Krakoa. However, it was later revealed in “Deadly Genesis” that this new team was actually the second rescue attempt. The first attempt, led by Vulcan and three other mutants who were secretly students of Moira McTaggart, failed. Although they managed to free Cyclops, their actions angered Krakoa, causing the island to kill the four-member team, leaving everyone to believe they perished. Unbeknownst to others, Vulcan survived because his teammate Darwin combined their powers to protect them. In the end of “Second Genesis,” Vulcan and Krakoa were blasted into space together.

In a surprising turn of events, Vulcan turned out to be Cyclops’s long-lost brother, a fact that came to light just before they embarked on their mission. Overwhelmed by the loss of his teammates, Cyclops was left in despair. To conceal the truth and hide his own guilt about sending the team to their demise, Professor X erased all memories of the event from Cyclops’s mind.

Later, when a new X-Men team arrived at Krakoa, Professor X manipulated everyone’s memories with his powers, convincing them that the island was fully sentient, when in reality, it was merely an instinctual being. This deception was intended to promote the belief that Krakoa had released Cyclops to attract more mutants. However, this aspect of the story was slightly altered at the beginning of the Krakoan era of the X-Men, as it has been established that the island is indeed sentient.

How This Story Changed Professor X

Professor X concealed the fact that the initial rescue team had apparently perished from public knowledge and erased their presence from people’s memories. He chose not to inform Cyclops or Havok about their hidden brother, fearing the emotional burden it might bring upon them. In essence, he decided it was better for everyone to be unaware of this fact, resorting to deception to hide his own feelings of shame and guilt. This act served as a foundation for more controlling and manipulative actions that Professor X would later take.

Firstly, the initial transformation of Charles’s character from a reliable mentor into a skilled manipulator paved the way for various revisions to his backstory. For instance, it could be unveiled that Charles didn’t invite Wolverine to join the X-Men out of goodwill, but instead sent him as an assassin and erased Wolverine’s memory, leading him to believe he made the choice himself. This marked the beginning of Charles’s descent from questionable decisions to full-blown villainy. This downward spiral continued during the Krakoan era, where Charles and Magneto concealed secrets that had the potential to tear apart all mutantkind. Throughout this period, Charles appeared more as a morally ambiguous antihero rather than a teacher. His actions became increasingly villainous, contradicting his goal of elevating mutants above others.

It appears that Professor X is currently undergoing a transformation towards redemption. For dramatic effect, Professor X temporarily took on the role of an antagonist. As the X-Men were poised to enter a bold, edgy new phase, having Professor X as a symbol of hope made it challenging to maintain this era’s intensity. The storyline Deadly Genesis represented the X-Men breaking away from their past and venturing into an uncertain future where Charles’ vision of peace seemed farther away than ever. Although there are intriguing tales to be told with a more villainous Charles, it is essential that he remains the cornerstone of the X-Men’s ethical code. His dream unites them all and serves as their inspiration, just as they inspire him. With his upcoming debut in the MCU, I believe it’s crucial for audiences to encounter Professor X in his intended form: a man with flaws but striving to be good and fighting for a better world honorably.
