As a seasoned comic book enthusiast who’s been following Marvel’s cosmic tales since the days of the original Guardians, I must say that The Ultimates #8 has truly stirred the cosmic dust with the introduction of the Ultimate Guardians of the Galaxy!
The creative team of Deniz Camp, Juan Frigeri, Federico Blee, and VC’s Travis Lanham have crafted a compelling narrative that not only sheds light on America Chavez’s origins but also gives us a glimpse into this new iteration of Marvel’s beloved spacefaring heroes.
What I find most intriguing is the stark contrast between these Ultimate Guardians and their Earth-616 counterparts. The transformation of Star-Lord, Ultimate Nullifier, Cosmo, and Captain Marvel into their ultimate selves has added a fresh layer to an already rich cosmic tapestry.
However, my favorite moment in this issue has to be the shared kiss between America Chavez and Captain Marvel. It’s a testament to the bond that these heroes share, not just as teammates but also as lovers. It’s a unique dynamic that I haven’t seen explored in comic books before, and it adds depth to the characters that I find truly captivating.
Now, let me leave you with a little joke: If you think The Maker is causing chaos in the Ultimate Universe, just wait until he meets the Ultimate Guardians of the Galaxy! They’re not just here to save everything; they’re here to make the universe dance to their tune!
Marvel’s current phase in its Ultimate Universe involves significant transformations within the Guardians of the Galaxy. Iron Lad, a character developed by Tony Stark, is working tirelessly to assemble his Ultimates, aiming to defeat The Maker and his corrupt council. Recently, Marvel has unveiled fresh versions of both heroes and villains across its entire lineup of Ultimate comics, but the ultimate Guardians of the Galaxy have yet to make an appearance… until now. These cosmic champions are on par with the Avengers and Ultimates, but their origin story in this universe is markedly different from what most fans are accustomed to.

In issue #8 of “The Ultimates”, the talented creative crew consisting of Deniz Camp, Juan Frigeri, Federico Blee, and letterer Travis Lanham take center stage. This particular installment focuses on America Chavez, a character previously saved by The Ultimates in the series. It is revealed that America Chavez is actually a Guardian of the Galaxy, and her team has journeyed from the 61st century to retrieve her. However, complications arise as America Chavez doesn’t remember The Ultimates.
Marvel’s Ultimate Guardians of the Galaxy explained
Marvel unveiled a sneak peek at the debut of a different version of the Guardians of the Galaxy back in October. This team includes Star-Lord, Ultimate Nullifier, Cosmo, and Captain Marvel, but they are distinctly unlike their counterparts in the Earth-616 universe. For instance, Star-Lord is depicted as a bald monk-like figure with a white beard, evoking Peter Quill’s “Master of the Sun” persona during Al Ewing’s run on Guardians of the Galaxy. In this universe, Star-Lord goes by Master of the Solar System, Lord of the Twelve Houses, and the Land Beyond the Sun.
The Ultimate Nullifier derives its name from the formidable Marvel artifact. It gained notoriety by vanquishing Mephisto with a single blast from its N-guns. With ease, the Ultimate Nullifier overpowers She-Hulk, effectively neutralizing her on the spot. Cosmo is affectionately known as the Ultimate Good Boy, while Captain Marvel showcases blue skin like the Kree and wears their Hala tracksuit. Additionally, she wields the Omni-bands and has a personal connection to America Chavez. Beyond being teammates, they also shared a romantic relationship.
In an attempt to mend America Chavez’s lost memories, Cosmo discovers they’ve been violently extracted by the Maker. Since America lacks any recollections, Captain Marvel steps in and offers her own memories as a substitute. The story unfolds with America Chavez and Captain Marvel joining forces in combat, also sharing an affectionate kiss. Their synergy is undeniable, explaining why the Guardians have exerted such effort to recover their comrade. Regrettably, America decides to remain with the Ultimates to aid them in their battle against the Maker.
How The Maker influenced the Ultimate Guardians of the Galaxy
When the Creator altered the Multiverse to ensure no heroes would emerge, it triggered a chain reaction through time that impacted the 61st century. As Captain Universe felt sorrow and anguish emanating from the 21st century, the Guardians dispatched their most seasoned champions to the past to explore the cause. However, only one of them came back alive, carrying a dire message about “The Destroyer.
The Guardians of the Galaxy abide by their creed, “Protect everything.” Pursuing this mission, they transformed the 61st century into a colossal spacecraft and navigated it towards the Superflow, a realm of information that exists between universes. Despite encountering numerous obstacles, such as encounters with Kang the Conqueror, Planet Hulk, and the demise of Galactus, they persevered. Unfortunately, their vessel was eventually destroyed, leaving its surviving occupants adrift through time. Notably, Captain Marvel found herself in the distant past, while America Chavez ended up in a troublesome period spanning from 1963 to 2024. It seems this placement in time might have been orchestrated by the Maker to keep time travelers from disrupting his influence over the Ultimate Universe.
Somehow, America Chavez managed to burst through the time barrier, allowing the Maker to seize her. Cosmo, the spacehound, was able to track America’s distinctive scent, guiding the Guardians of the Galaxy to her location. Captain Marvel has glimpsed the future of the Ultimate Universe, revealing a dismal outcome where the Maker triumphs and the Ultimates are defeated. However, America Chavez remains hopeful that they can alter the fate. In parting, the Guardians of the Galaxy equip America with a temporal flare to summon them if she requires assistance in the future.
It would be wonderful if the Guardians of the Galaxy came back to aid in overthrowing the Maker. In fact, one could imagine a future comic series titled “The Ultimate Guardians of the Galaxy,” detailing their journey as they search for their lost team members. As we have 10 months left until the Maker’s return, it will be interesting to see if this event unfolds before 2025 comes to an end.
