Marvel Just Re-Introduced Thor’s Son Into Canon After a 20-Year Absence

As a die-hard Marvel fan who has witnessed the rise and fall of many characters, I can confidently say that the return of Magni Thorson is a momentous occasion that brings back nostalgic memories of my early days reading comics. The son of Thor Odinson and Amora, the Enchantress, was a pivotal character in the early 2000s, and his return after two decades has added a new layer of complexity to the ongoing saga of Thor.

In a surprising turn of events, Marvel has resurrected a significant character who has been absent for twenty years: Magni Thorson, the son of Thor Odinson and Amora, also known as the Enchantress. This long-awaited return was revealed in issue #17 of Immortal Thor, penned by writer Al Ewing, who has been delving into the rich history of Thor for this new series. Thanks to a questionable partnership between Thor and Amora, along with a predictable betrayal, Magni is now back in the picture!

WARNING: Spoilers below for Immortal Thor #17

“The Emergence of Midgard’s Deities!”: Four new deities appeared on Earth, summoned by Thor’s adversaries to claim his life – a man of fire, a stone-made man, a wrathful beast, and a cunning serpent. Each had cause to despise the thunder god…and united, they possessed the strength to bring an end to his rule as an All-Father. This is the tale of the ETERNAL THOR…and what ultimately shattered him.

In “Immortal Thor” #17, Thor endeavors to repay a debt he feels he owes to Amora, following the demise of her son Iric Brorson, who was an apprentice at Doctor Strange’s magic-user academy – perishing in combat with Dormammu and his associate Emily Bright, during their efforts to protect their friend and roommate, Doyle Dormammu. Tormented by guilt for not having been present to aid Iric against Dormammu, Thor is driven to grant Amora access to his divine might (All-Power) to empower a spell meant to resurrect her son using the Fire of the deity Ullr. However, while Thor and Lady Sif keep watch over Amora to prevent her from misusing the All-Power, they overlook the specific son she intends to revive, and it is ultimately Magni that she believes deserves a second chance at life.

Who Is Thor’s Son Magni?

It turns out that Enchantress had foreseen various scenarios prior to casting her spell, and she found a timeline where she and Thor had a son named Magni. In the Marvel Universe, this son, Magni Thorson, was born on Earth-3515 – a world where Thor and the Asgardian gods ruled over Earth during a story arc called “Thor: Lord of Earth – The Reigning”, as depicted in the early 2004 issues of Marvel’s Thor comics. However, this fact seems to have escaped Thor’s notice.

Approximately two decades into Asgard’s dominion over Earth, Magni was born. In infancy, he was abducted by Balder the Brave, a former Asgardian warrior who switched allegiance and joined Earth’s surviving superheroes in their fight. The conflict between Thor, Loki, and the rebellious group resulted in tragic consequences, including the deaths of Captain America, Wolverine, Doctor Strange, Hulk, Vision, Carol Danvers, and others, as they sought to reclaim Magni. As he matured, Magni developed into a warrior and adventurer much like his father. His heroic spirit eventually led him to confront Thor, Loki, and his mother, whom he perceived as having betrayed humanity due to their rule over Earth. When ancient adversaries resurfaced against Thor (the Designate, Desak), Magni made the ultimate sacrifice in battle to protect the world.

In the future of Earth-3515, a chilling lesson unfolded for present-day Thor, prompting him to reunite his human and divine selves once more in search of equilibrium. This choice wiped out the timeline where Magni resided, leaving only Thor with memories of him – until now, those memories resurfaced.

In the Marvel 616 Universe, Magni Thorson has joined the ranks, and this addition by Ewing brings a fresh perspective on how the realm of Thor will unfold and evolve.

Immortal Thor is on sale at Marvel.
