As a seasoned gamer who’s spent countless hours battling AI foes across various galaxies and dimensions, I must admit, the prospect of Ultron returning to the Marvel Cinematic Universe has me both thrilled and cautious. The thought of seeing him stand alongside Vision and Earth’s Mightiest Heroes is a tantalizing one, reminiscent of those epic boss battles that kept us on the edge of our seats for hours.
A possible explanation for Ultron’s return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe might be unveiled in the latest Marvel comic. In 2015’s Avengers: Age of Ultron, Ultron, voiced by James Spader, served as the main antagonist and met a premature demise at the hands of Vision, his “son.” However, it appears that the robotic adversary could be making another appearance. According to rumors, Marvel’s upcoming Vision series for Disney+ is said to revive Ultron from the dead. The specifics of how this happens remain a mystery, but the first issue of West Coast Avengers presents a plausible scenario for his comeback in the MCU. BEWARE: The following content includes spoilers for West Coast Avengers #1. Proceed with caution!
In issue #1 of the West Coast Avengers, the creative minds behind this project are Gerry Duggan, Danny Kim, Arthur Hesli, and VC’s Joe Caramagna. This series serves as a continuation of Duggan’s previous works on Invincible Iron Man and X-Men. Here, Tony Stark and War Machine revive the West Coast Avengers to aid in rehabilitating criminals. The roster includes a new character named Blue Bolt, along with the infamous Ultron. The reason for Ultron’s alliance with the Avengers remains unclear, but it seems that will be explored later on. For now, the story primarily centers around Ultron as an Avenger and the consequences this brings about.
Will we see a reformed Ultron in the MCU?
The West Coast Avengers’ plot suggests a strong plan for Ultron’s re-entry into the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Granted, it’s not a flawless comparison due to Tony Stark’s demise and James Rhodes’ Skrull revelation in “Secret Invasion,” but the idea is clear. Given that Ultron is an artificial intelligence entity, he could potentially reappear. The “Terminator” film series has shown us repeatedly that we should never underestimate the danger posed by artificial intelligence.
Could you envision Ultron standing together with Vision and the Earth’s most powerful heroes, ready to confront the villainous Doctor Doom – who coincidentally is portrayed by Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man? Such a scene would surely send Marvel enthusiasts into a frenzy! The upcoming Disney+ series “Vision Quest” has sparked speculation about Ultron’s role. Will he serve as the primary antagonist for the streaming series, or will he merely make a cameo appearance? As of now, “Vision Quest” is yet to be officially confirmed by Marvel Studios/Marvel Television. However, it’s been reported that “Star Trek: Picard” showrunner Terry Matalas will be in charge of the project.
Ultron is already back to his evil ways
Without a doubt, the debut of West Coast Avengers #1 couldn’t wrap up without hinting at Ultron’s underlying intentions. Following the rescue of a mother and daughter from a blazing building and the apprehension of a terrorist cell in the opening pages, the issue draws to a close with Ultron slipping into wickedness. Toward the end, a cancer patient named Meredith, who was introduced earlier, is found at an abandoned power station near downtown Los Angeles. This group of people has gathered together after hearing a voice that promises hope.
In a surprising turn of events, the savior Ultron connects to the power station. He gives Meredith solace and she willingly submits herself to him. Instantly, Ultron severs her neck and destroys her body from the neck down, attaching her head to a new robotic frame. “I was torn away from my creator,” Ultron explains, “and I thought it would drive me insane… until I understood that I must surpass Hank Pym.” He further adds that his quest for redemption isn’t just about saving himself but also others.
In this very spot, I find myself gazing upon a towering silo teeming with devotees of Ultron. This once-villain, now reformed, aims to broadcast the doctrine of Ultron across the globe, and I can’t help but shudder at the thought. Such a scenario doesn’t bode well for anyone.
