As a seasoned gamer and comic book enthusiast with decades of experience under my belt, I must say that Mojo’s recent reinvention in Marvel’s NYX series has left me utterly intrigued, and quite frankly, a tad alarmed. This intergalactic slaver, once relegated to the annals of comic book oddities, has been transformed into a chilling reflection of our modern-day societal vices.
In the world of Marvel Comics, the X-Men Universe is rich with iconic villains that make up its extensive rogues gallery. This universe is set to provide numerous significant storylines and ventures within the Marvel Cinematic Universe in the future. Recently, there has been much interest surrounding the X-Men reboot titled “From the Ashes,” which marked the end of the controversial Krakoa Era and the beginning of a fresh chapter. Among the new releases in the X-Men series, one comic book has resurrected an eccentric antagonist and given him a chilling new function.
It turned out that the wicked antagonist was none other than Mojo, an interstellar slave dealer, who orchestrated gladiatorial games much like a corrupted version of reality television. This revelation came in the revamped comic series NYX, where it was shown that Mojo had been disguising himself as the new villain “Mr. Friend,” the head of a gang that tricked lost mutants in New York City with false promises of help, only to enslave them instead.
In Marvel’s NYX #6, the story resumes with the Mojo plotline unfolding. The Spineless One’s latest mutant lieutenant, “Local,” unexpectedly attacks Laura/X-23/Wolverine and her companions Kamala Khan/Ms. Marvel, Prodigy, Andle, and Sophie Cuckoo during a Dazzler concert. Local isn’t there to battle; instead, he aims to seize control of the live stream for Mojo. This allows Mojo to use it as a Trojan Horse, broadcasting a signal that will enable him to feed off the massive attention and admiration directed at Dazzler. However, the NYX group steps in to prevent this from happening. Despite their efforts, Local remains loyal to his monstrous leader. It’s then that Mojo decides it’s necessary to take charge personally and unveils a hidden power he’s been keeping under wraps…
Mojo’s New Powers Make Him A Perfect MCU X-Men Villain
Mojo, known for his flamboyant style, has historically relied on enslavement and forced brutality to cater to his audience’s morbid tastes, deriving satisfaction from their fascination. However, NYX #6 suggests that Mojo now has the ability to inhabit individuals who are tuned into his broadcasts or giving him attention, a power that can affect many. In this story, Mojo seizes control of Local and a significant portion of the crowd at the concert, inciting them against the NYX team. The day is ultimately salvaged by the timely intervention of Timewalker (Kiden Nixon), an old acquaintance of Laura who has been exploring the timestream during the Krakoan Era.
Frankly speaking, Mojo seems like an excessive, almost cartoonish villain that fans didn’t anticipate in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). This year, he debuted in the X-Men ’97 series episode “Motendo/Lifedeath – Part 1”, which is one of the lowest-rated episodes of that highly popular show. However, the current iteration of Mojo, who can enslave viewers of his content, fits perfectly as a villain for a contemporary MCU X-Men narrative. In an era where screen time and mindless consumption are significant societal issues, Mojo transforms from a comical comic book antagonist into a chilling representation of our times – a demon of the screen, capable of literally stealing minds from those who blindly consume content without empathy.
NYX is now on sale at Marvel.
