Marvel Kills Two Major Heroes in Wolverine: Revenge

Marvel Kills Two Major Heroes in Wolverine: Revenge

As a seasoned gamer with over three decades of Marvel comics under my belt, I must say that Wolverine: Revenge has truly taken me by surprise. The death of Magneto and Nick Fury in this miniseries is as shocking as the day I lost my favorite character in Final Fantasy VII.

In the latest issue of Wolverine’s comic, two of Marvel’s highly esteemed heroes suffered a tragic end. The X-Men are now embarking on their “From the Ashes” phase, which brings fresh creative minds and narratives as mutants strive to rebuild following Krakoa’s downfall. Given this, it makes sense that Wolverine would have his own series, but an exceptional duo consisting of Jonathan Hickman and Greg Capullo are working on the miniseries “Wolverine: Revenge“. This spin-off series, distinct from “X-Men: From the Ashes”, offers them freedom from continuity constraints, leading to the deaths of two Avengers.

Issue #1 of “Wolverine: Retaliation” is penned by Jonathan Hickman, with artwork by Greg Capullo and Tim Townsend, colored by FCO Plascencia, and lettering by VC’s Cory Petit. The storyline unfolds as an asteroid named Asteroid M hurtles towards Earth, causing widespread destruction upon impact. Magneto is among the fatalities, triggering an unprecedented Electromagnetic Pulse that cripples the northern hemisphere’s electricity and technology infrastructure. Nick Fury estimates a staggering death toll of over 100 million people, with more at risk as S.H.I.E.L.D. struggles to restore power. With no end in sight, Fury enlists Wolverine, Captain America, and the Winter Soldier for a covert operation to retrieve a cold fusion S.E.E.D. reactor from the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants.

As the trio embark towards the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants’ hideout, they fall into an unexpected trap set by Sabretooth, Deadpool, and Omega Red. In a shocking turn of events, Mastermind surgically implants bombs within their chests, and to our surprise, Colossus is revealed as an ally of this group. When Wolverine confronts Colossus about his shift in allegiance, the latter explains that he’s choosing to side with his fellow countrymen instead of Western invaders seeking to plunder their resources. Eventually, they are all rescued, allowing Captain America and Winter Soldier to return to the U.S. However, Deadpool manages to detonate the bombs prematurely, putting our heroes in grave danger. Wolverine suffers this fate but his regenerative abilities help him recover.
