Marvel Livestream Reveals Thunderbolts Cast: Spider-Man Spoilers Ahead?

Attention: Information Ahead May Contain Spoilers Regarding Thunderbolts and Avengers: Doomsday! Marvel Studios stirred quite a buzz on Wednesday morning by hosting a livestream simply labeled “ANNOUNCEMENT.” It appears they are gradually disclosing the cast for Avengers: Doomsday, unveiling our team of heroes that will take center stage in the final act of the Multiverse Saga. The issue with this gradual reveal is that it strongly suggests the characters shown will make it through the upcoming movies and TV series until then. In essence, you might consider this a spoiler, particularly for Thunderbolts, as three members from that squad have already appeared in the livestream.

At the moment of this post, the Marvel Entertainment live stream is ongoing, and three actors from the upcoming Thunderbolts movie have made an appearance: Sebastian Stan as Bucky Barnes (also known as the Winter Soldier), Florence Pugh portraying Yelena Belova (a trained assassin known as the Widow), and Wyatt Russell in the role of John Walker, or U.S. Agent. Other actors that have been announced so far include Anthony Mackie, Letitia Wright, Paul Rudd, Tenoch Huerta Mejia, Ebon Moss-Bachrach, Simu Liu, and once again Florence Pugh.

It’s important to mention that the style of this upcoming movie, Doomsday, highlights the performers rather than their iconic characters. Although we know MCU stalwart Robert Downey Jr. is coming back, he’ll be portraying a new character instead of reprising his old one. Therefore, it’s not automatic to expect these actors to embody their most recognized roles. Given that this is the Multiverse Saga, where multiple versions of characters exist, this kind of role switching makes perfect sense.

Regardless, some fans thought that the presence of Stan and Russell in this major reveal lessened the anticipation for Thunderbolts, which is fast approaching (releasing on May 2nd). The only other Marvel Cinematic Universe film this year is The Fantastic Four: First Steps, set to premiere on July 25th. Following that is Doomsday, scheduled for May 1, 2026.

Between now and then, the streaming series segment of the franchise isn’t going to see much action. Currently airing is “Daredevil: Born Again,” and “Ironheart” is scheduled for a June 24th, 2025 premiere. This show will center around Riri Williams, who was first introduced in “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.” Her technological abilities will be tested against a villain empowered by the mystic arts. There’s no hint yet that Shuri, played by Letitia Wright, will appear in this series, but her possible involvement could add another layer of intrigue to the ongoing storyline.

To clarify, a significant part of the debate among fans about Russell’s appearance in Wednesday’s announcement lies in the suggestion that he will embody a heroic character in “Doomsday”. It’s not so much his presence in general that’s causing controversy, but rather this perceived role. John Walker, from “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier”, is portrayed as a complex character with political and ethical complications, and some fans are hesitant to see him labeled an “official Avenger”. There’s apprehension that “Thunderbolts” might go too far in rehabilitating him, but this concern seems to be countered by the inclusion of Mejia, who played a villainous character responsible for genocide in “Wakanda Forever”. This leads fans to question whether this list is for the Avengers team or if redemption stories are indeed being explored.

As a fan, I’m eagerly awaiting Marvel’s latest announcement unfolding right now, and you can catch all the real-time updates here! The action-packed film “Thunderbolts” is set to hit theaters on May 2nd, while earlier MCU titles are currently streaming on Disney+ for your viewing pleasure.
