As a seasoned comic book connoisseur who has traversed the multiverse of Marvel’s intricate narratives, I must say that the latest What If…? series has truly piqued my interest. The Hulk as the Herald of Galactus is an audacious twist on Bruce Banner’s tale that I find utterly captivating!
The idea of a silver-skinned Hulk, wielding the power cosmic and serving as Galactus’ herald, is not only visually striking but also offers a fresh perspective on one of Marvel’s most iconic characters. The narrative presents a moral dilemma that challenges the reader to question the extent of heroism and sacrifice.
The confrontation between Herald Hulk and Iron Man, particularly with Stark in his upgraded Hulkbuster armor, is an exhilarating display of power and will. It’s a testament to the creative team’s ability to weave a captivating story that keeps readers on the edge of their seats.
The twist at the end, where Hulk realizes Galactus is not inevitable, adds a sense of unpredictability that makes this series stand out. I can’t wait to see how this story unfolds, and I’m eagerly anticipating the upcoming issues featuring Moon Knight, Gambit, Rogue, and Spider-Gwen as the Herald of Galactus!
Lastly, let me leave you with a little humor: I guess it’s safe to say that when it comes to the Hulk, there truly is no master… except maybe for a good burger or a strong cup of coffee!
In various instances, The Hulk has been known by multiple nicknames such as The Green Goliath, Jade Giant, Greenskin, Joe Fixit, Green Scar, Doc Green, and World Breaker. Now, The Incredible Hulk takes on a new Herald Hulk. This is from Marvel’s “What If…? Galactus Transformed Hulk” #1, written by Mat Groom (of “Giant-Size Silver Surfer”) and illustrated by Lan Medina (from “Gamma Flight”). These one-shot comics will reimagine some of Earth’s strongest heroes like Moon Knight, Spider-Gwen, Rogue, and Gambit of the X-Men as cosmic-empowered heralds of Galactus, the World Devourer.
Instead of Norrin Radd, who agreed to find planets for Galactus’ consumption to save his planet Zenn-La, this narrative depicts Bruce Banner as the new silver-skinned herald. (In this version, Galactus approached Banner in search of a new herald after Reed Richards of the Fantastic Four used the Ultimate Nullifier to repel Galactus in 1966’s Fantastic Four #50).
What If… The Hulk Was the Herald of Galactus?
Upon coming back to Earth, Galactus looked for Earth’s strongest heroes – specifically, the Hulk. He felt that Bruce Banner was misusing the Hulk’s power by hiding in voluntary exile. Galactus made it clear to Banner that if he agreed, his monstrous counterpart would no longer bring harm to Earth through its rampages and destruction. In the end, Banner consented to keep Earth safe from the Hulk’s destructive outbursts forevermore.
As the herald, Banner sounded the alarm about the approach of Galactus and arranged for the residents of every planet to leave on colony vessels. When Galactus dispatched Banner to Elysion-3 to ready the planet for his visit during the Kree-Skrull War, he encountered the Avengers: Iron Man (Tony Stark), Captain Marvel (Carol Danvers), and the Vision.
Herald Hulk… Smash!
In response to Banner’s claim that the Avengers ignored issues beyond Earth, Stark countered by calling his ex-team member a messenger for a “murderous device.” This comment infuriated Banner, leading him to transform into the Hulk and destroy Vision and Captain Marvel within just 60 seconds.
In the meantime, Tony Stark donned an advanced Iron Man armor modeled on Doctor Doom’s seized cosmic belt, boosting his power and enabling him to endure Hulk’s cosmic energy attacks. The ensuing battle between Hulk and Iron Man was a fierce brawl that devastated Elysion-3, causing Banner’s colony ship to be destroyed and putting the planet’s inhabitants in grave danger. This realization of Banner’s concern for the evacuated innocents only fueled the Rampaging Hulk’s fury, and as he demolished the Hulkbuster armor, a defeated Stark came to understand that Banner really cared about the people he saved from Galactus’ herald.
Later on, Stark revealed to Banner the reality: when Galactus came back to Earth, he informed the heroes that he would spare their planet if they handed over their strongest warrior to serve as his herald. The Avengers proposed the Hulk to Galactus not only to avert the world’s doom, but also to protect it from the Hulk himself.
We considered the possibility that Galactus, the cosmic entity, might be powerful enough to subdue or control the Hulk.
As Stark admitted they erred in banishing the Hulk as Galactus’ minion, the Hulk rescued a Kree girl buried under debris and transformed into his Silver Surfer form instead. He aimed to protect people from Galactus, but he eventually comprehended that Galactus was unavoidable.
However, Stark clarified, “He’s not. That’s just what they want you to believe.” He added, “Because there is only one thing that’s absolutely certain… the Hulk doesn’t answer to anyone.” This revelation enraged the Hulk.
An enraged Silver Hulk, radiating green with gamma energy and wielding cosmic power, bounded into the cosmos, issuing a stern caution to Galactus.
“HULK IS COMING.”
