Marvel Makes Wolverine the Ultimate Weapon: The Winter Soldier

As a seasoned gamer with over two decades of comic book adventures under my belt, I can’t help but feel a surge of excitement as I delve into the new phase of Marvel’s Ultimate Universe. The prospect of a feral Wolverine, transformed into the Winter Soldier, is a thrilling twist that sends shivers down my spine.

He’s the best there is at what he does — and what he does is kill. Marvel has been teasing that the new Ultimate Universe phase two will unleash a feral Wolverine not as Weapon X, but as the Maker’s Ultimate Weapon: The Winter Soldier. The world remade by the Maker (an alternate Reed Richards from the old Ultimate Marvel Universe) is ruled by the Maker’s Council, which includes the Rasputins: the leaders of the Eurasian Republic, known to the public as a “rogue state” among the seven major territories that comprise Earth-6160.

In essence, Illyana Rasputina (Magik), Piotr Rasputin (Colossus), and Arkady Rossovich (Omega Red) have taken up the role that is now being referred to as “the adversary.” It’s been covertly orchestrated by The Council to create a shared enemy for citizens of various nations, while they subtly strengthen their grip on global power. This includes the North American Union (formerly the United States of America), The Society of South America, The Upper and Lower Kingdoms, The Eurasian Republic, The Children of Eternal Light, The European Coalition, and Hi No Kuni.

In this alternate universe, known as the Eurasian Republic, the deadliest resource is a silent figure known as the Winter Soldier, adorned with the emblem of the Soviet Union that once belonged to Russia. The comic series “Ultimate Invasion” by Jonathan Hickman and Bryan Hitch reveals that the James Buchanan Barnes from this world has perished, and during the reshaping of reality using a device called the Immortus Engine, the Maker acquired a blood sample from the potential Winter Soldier of Earth-6166. This action was taken to prevent threats such as the Fantastic Four who never formed a team due to their untimely demise, or key figures like Peter Parker (Spider-Man), Hank Pym (Giant-Man), and Janet van Dyne (the Wasp) who were inactive and would not realize their destinies as superheroes until Tony Stark (Iron Lad) stepped in to guide them on the right path.

In December, the final version of Winter Soldier will make an appearance alongside Ultimate Nick Fury in the one-shot issue #1 of Ultimate Universe: One Year In, written by Deniz Camp from the Ultimates series. This creative team also includes Chris Condon, who is soon to work on Ultimate Wolverine, and Alessandro Cappucio, known for his work on Moon Knight. After this debut, Winter Soldier will have a standalone series starting in January.

In a similar fashion to his Earth-616 counterpart, the Ultimate Wolverine underwent government weaponization. However, on Earth-6160, this mind-erased mutant functions as an assassin and reluctant tool of the Maker, serving as their ultimate weapon: the Winter Soldier.

In response to editor Wil Moss’s phone call asking if I was interested in working on this project, I eagerly accepted and instantly had a concept for it, said Condon. “I’m infusing the storytelling style from That Texas Blood into the Marvel Universe with Wolverine, reflecting on what has transpired before and offering something fresh.

He playfully hinted, “You may observe a red star on his attire, and it might pique your curiosity.” He then added, “If you examine the mask, you’ll notice a snout-like feature, which indicates he’s a wild character.

Marvel Comics has given us a sneak peek at the initial two issues of the upcoming series, titled “Ultimate Wolverine“. This new title will complement the ongoing comics like “Ultimate Spider-Man“, “Ultimate Black Panther“, “Ultimate X-Men“, and “The Ultimates“. In February, the second issue of “Ultimate Wolverine” will showcase a special variant cover by artist Leinil Francis Yu, who is known for his work on “Avengers Assemble“, as well as another variant by “Spider-Woman” cover artist Junggeun Yoon. These covers will highlight the Winter Soldier-inspired design of Ultimate Wolverine.
