Contention! The cover art for the 1987’s Amazing Spider-Man Annual #21 by artist John Romita may have been slightly deceptive. Contrary to the standard version sold directly, which depicted Peter Parker and Mary Jane Watson in tuxedos and fancy attire among friends and family, the widely recognized newsstand edition featured Spider-Man in his red-and-blue suit marrying Mary Jane. (Notably, the oversized special wedding issue portrayed Spider-Man’s villains disrupting the ceremony, but this was only a part of Peter’s pre-wedding anxiety dream.)
From my perspective as a devoted fan, their wedding day with Peter and MJ was flawlessly executed, leading to a blissful life together… until the contentious comic series “Spider-Man: One More Day” rewrote their marriage, and later, “Spider-Man: One Moment In Time” rectified the wedding debacle following the narrative reset for the “Brand New Day” era in 2008.
For fans who root for Peter and Mary Jane as a married couple, the recently unveiled #7 cover of All-New Venom by artist David Baldeón (Ben Reilly: Spider-Man) – reminiscent of the classic and adored Amazing Spider-Man wedding issue – feels like a harsh symbiote strike. It’s particularly painful given that one of Eddie Brock’s initial actions after bonding with Spider-Man’s discarded alien costume was to torment Mary Jane.
On the final page of Wednesday’s All-New Venom #5 by Al Ewing and Carlos Gomez, it was unveiled that the character previously known as Mrs. Parker, who is also Jackpot, a superhero with technological abilities, has taken on the role of the current host for the Venom symbiote. This revelation came after the symbiote, which had been detached from Eddie and his son Dylan Brock during the Venom War written by Ewing, was kept hidden from readers while they followed red herring suspects like Madame Masque, Robbie Robertson, Rick Jones, and Luke Cage. Dylan was investigating these characters as potential hosts for the symbiote.
Together with an emblematic artwork depicting the suspects as guests at a wedding along with Dylan and MJ’s current partner, Paul Rabin, Marvel provided this description: “MJ and Venom are celebrating their new bond as symbiote and host — a connection that will last until death separates them.
Spider-Man’s former wife, now his ex-girlfriend and the archvillain Venom, will not have their marriage from “One More Day” annulled, despite the fact that Marvel editorial has received a lot of positive feedback about the married Parkers in Jonathan Hickman and Marco Checchetto’s praised “Ultimate Spider-Man” series.
In simpler terms, Nick Lowe, who is a Spider-Man editor, wrote in a letters column in 2023 that we’ve mostly moved past this issue and it’s unlikely that things will be changed back anytime soon. However, he added that he would never completely rule out the possibility.
All-New Venom #6
As a follower, I’ve uncovered some intriguing insights into the emergence of the All-New Venom. The identity has been revealed, but the journey – how it came to be – remains a mystery. Post the Venom War, a series of unusual events led to this symbiote’s choice of host. There seems to be an inexplicable bond between them that prevents separation. Intriguingly, Jackpot is about to clash with Venom, and she might not appreciate the revelations that ensue!
