Marvel Needs to Bring Back Scarlet Witch in Avengers: Doomsday!

As a devoted Scarlet Witch fan, I can’t help but feel disheartened once more as Marvel reveals the cast for Avengers: Doomsday, finding no mention of Elizabeth Olsen, who brilliantly portrays the Scarlet Witch, aka Wanda Maximoff. Since 2022’s Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, where it seemed Wanda met her end by collapsing Mount Wundagore upon herself, fans have been left guessing about her MCU fate. Just a year prior, Wanda embarked on an intriguing odyssey through pain and loss in the Disney+ series WandaVision. Despite Kevin Feige’s November statement expressing eagerness to explore “when and how Scarlet Witch can return,” there’s currently no hint that she’ll make an appearance in Avengers: Doomsday, set for release in 2026, marking four years since her last MCU project. Thus, the wait continues, with fans hopeful for more Scarlet Witch adventures in the future.

Although Scarlet Witch’s appearance might be concealed until the release of “Doomsday,” and there’s speculation about her role in “Avengers: Secret Wars,” at this moment, it appears that Marvel has no immediate plans for this significant character who should be a prominent figure in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Despite some setbacks throughout her journey since making her MCU debut in the post-credits scene of 2014’s “Captain America: The Winter Soldier,” the intriguing narrative arc followed by Wanda has captivated numerous viewers. Elizabeth Olsen’s morally-ambiguous hero has also demonstrated significant importance within the franchise, making her prolonged absence even more concerning.

As it Stands, the MCU Is Wasting the Scarlet Witch’s Potential

It’s strange that at a point when the MCU (Marvel Cinematic Universe) is focusing heavily on fan favorites, it has put one of its most beloved characters, the Scarlet Witch, on hold. Over the past decade, Wanda’s presence has significantly fueled Marvel enthusiasm, and since her unclear future in the MCU post-Multiverse of Madness, some fans have expressed dissatisfaction, and rightfully so. Marvel seems to be missing out on capitalizing on the Scarlet Witch’s popularity, particularly at a time when the franchise needs a boost. Instead, the MCU has ended Wanda’s storyline with Multiverse of Madness, an ending that was met with criticism by many. To prevent repeating past errors, Marvel shouldn’t hastily adjust Wanda’s story. However, the longer this wait continues, the more discontentment grows among fans.

A glimmer of anticipation emerged when the 2024 series Agatha All Along hinted at a possible Scarlet Witch comeback by casting doubt on her supposed death and introducing her son Billy Maximoff, also known as Wiccan (played by Joe Locke). However, the long-awaited resurgence of Wanda has taken an excessively long time to materialize. One challenge lies in the multitude of projects and characters that the MCU has managed since Phase 4’s onset. To date, a total of twelve films and thirteen television shows have been released during Phases 4 and 5, with limited interplay between them, making individual hero appearances sporadic. A brief break for Wanda following her Multiverse of Madness outcome seems plausible, but the MCU may be hurting itself by delaying her return.

There Are Numerous Reasons to Continue the Scarlet Witch’s Story in the MCU

The reappearance of Scarlet Witch shouldn’t be just to satisfy fans, but rather, it should have a substantial plot reason. Though the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) has successfully incorporated fan favorites like Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield in Spider-Man: No Way Home, and revived characters such as Robert Downey Jr., original Fox X-Men actors, and possibly Chris Evans in Avengers: Endgame, it’s crucial that the stories are not primarily driven by fan service. In Scarlet Witch’s case, Marvel already has a rich source of compelling reasons to reintroduce the character. Numerous comic book storylines involving Doctor Doom and the X-Men, such as House of M, could provide fascinating foundations for her upcoming narrative. Furthermore, significant events like Avengers: Endgame or Secret Wars could offer an ideal platform for Scarlet Witch’s much-awaited return.

Beyond doubt, the Scarlet Witch’s domain within the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) is captivating, as evident in shows like WandaVision and its spinoff series Agatha All Along. These productions have shown that the magical realm of the MCU not only appeals to audiences but also serves as compelling standalone narratives. The exceptional writing by showrunner Jac Schaeffer has made WandaVision and Agatha All Along some of the finest character development and storytelling in the MCU so far. Continuing the Scarlet Witch’s story, along with characters like Billy and Tommy Maximoff, Kathryn Hahn’s Agatha Harkness, Aubrey Plaza’s Rio Vidal, and others, would undeniably enhance the quality and viewer engagement of the MCU.

In cinemas starting May 2nd, Marvel Cinematic Universe presents the movie “Thunderbolts”. Meanwhile, every Tuesday on Disney+, a fresh episode of “Daredevil: Reborn” is released.
