Marvel Producer Brad Winderbaum Addresses Agatha All Along & Other Horror Projects in the MCU

As Halloween nears, the discussion about the supernatural elements in the Marvel Cinematic Universe resurfaces once more. Despite all the buzz and hints about future projects from the franchise, there’s been a noticeable lack of focus on the horror genre. The only notable exception is Agatha All Along, an upcoming Disney+ series that serves as a continuation of sorts to WandaVision. This show revolves around the story of Agatha Harkness (Kathryn Hahn) following the events of WandaVision.

In a recent interview, Marvel producer Brad Winderbaum clarified Marvel Studios’ perspective on their supernatural/horror content, particularly regarding Agatha All Along. Essentially, he stated that Marvel isn’t focusing on horror as a specific genre but rather exploring the darker or frightening narratives that various creators might wish to develop.

As a gamer, I get it that every storyteller has their unique vision, and this translates differently across various genres, especially when it comes to creating a chilling atmosphere. For instance, the fear evoked in “Agatha” won’t be the same as in “Marvel Zombies,” or “Blade,” or even “Moon Knight.” The filmmaker’s intent plays a significant role in determining which horror elements we as viewers are meant to pick up on. This isn’t just exclusive to horror; it applies to any genre we dive into. After all, there are countless ways to spin a tale.

The projects Winderbaum mentions clearly span a broad spectrum of supernatural/horror genres. Agatha All Along seems to be following in the footsteps of movies like Hocus Pocus and Beetlejuice, with a comedic twist on the supernatural; Marvel Zombies will deliver a horror experience through animated zombie apocalypse scenes; however, it’s unclear what kind of action-horror blend we can expect from Blade, as its original trilogy was known for blending martial arts action with Rated-R horror and comic book elements. There have been whispers that Marvel Studios may have taken a drastically different approach with the reboot of the MCU’s Blade, making it almost unrecognizable from its roots.

After that, the Marvel Special Presentations focused on a fan favorite film titled Werewolf By Night. This special introduction sparked an epic tale of Marvel Monster Hunters, with Werewolf By Night, Elsa Bloodstone, and Man-Thing taking center stage. These characters share the limelight with Shang-Chi, Shuri/Black Panther II, the Eternals, and many others who are currently in development. The future of Moon Knight remains unclear as well.

For now: Here’s Everything We Do Know About Upcoming MCU Projects
