Marvel Recently Had Daredevil & The Punisher Go to War, and It Was Epic

In the Marvel Universe, Daredevil and the Punisher share an intense rivalry that’s hard to find a match anywhere else. At first glance, they might appear quite alike, as they both channel their intense anger to strive for justice. However, they are polar opposites in almost every other aspect, particularly when it comes to their thought processes.

The Punisher acts out of revenge and inflicts pain and death on those he considers deserving due to their criminal activities. Conversely, Daredevil is a hero because he aims to protect people. The Punisher views criminals as irredeemable, while Daredevil strongly believes in giving everyone an opportunity for redemption, no matter how many chances they may need. Essentially, they represent the antithesis of each other’s beliefs.

This intense rivalry between them can be traced back to their initial encounter many years ago. Since then, any interaction between them has erupted into an intense, unrestrained fight. Their confrontations are always incredibly fierce and seem to become more intense with each encounter. However, their latest encounter was not just a fight, it was a full-blown war. And it’s likely to be remembered as their most significant battle for a very long time.

The Road to War

The action-packed showdown between Daredevil and the Punisher unfolded in Chip Zdarsky’s renowned “The Hand vs the Fist” series, which appeared in both Daredevil and Punisher comics. To give you a brief overview of the events that culminated in one of Marvel’s grandest battles ever, the Punisher was enlisted by the deadly cult, the Hand, to serve as their leader. He was given the title ‘King of Killers’ and led the Hand as his private army, waging a relentless, bloody campaign. This was all under the influence and strengthening from the Hand’s demonic overlord, the Beast. On the other side, Daredevil spearheaded the Fist, an organization established to eradicate the Hand completely. Alongside Elektra, he enlisted killers and villains for the Fist, transforming them into soldiers fighting for a noble cause. However, little did Daredevil know, he was being manipulated by the Beast’s adversary and sister, the Wild.

Despite their intense animosity towards each other, Matt desperately wants Punisher to suffer for his actions, yet Daredevil makes one final attempt to save him before their inevitable confrontation. Slipping into the Hand’s compound on his own, he sought out Frank Castle to warn him about the Beast contaminating him. However, Frank chose to dismiss him and pursue him away, as the Punisher is indifferent to being used or considered just another weapon, so long as it points at those he wishes to target. With this realization, Daredevil departed, expecting their battle, feeling neither shocked nor dismayed by it.

Initially, the two factions were gearing up for an impending battle when, unfortunately, Bullet – a former antagonist and ex-member of the Fist – found his son being abducted by the Hand ninjas. To provoke Daredevil into a confrontation under favorable conditions, The Punisher orchestrated Bullet’s capture. This tactic proved successful, as Daredevil declared to all members of the Fist that they were woefully unprepared for this battle, having only a few short weeks of training and requiring significantly more time to defeat the Hand. However, there was an urgent matter at hand – a child needed their assistance immediately. This predicament motivated the entire Fist to rally together and confront the Hand without further delay.

The Final Battle

In this epic battle, an army of elite undead assassins, commanded by the Punisher and his dragon companion, went head-to-head with reformed villains, mentored by two Daredevils, bolstered by the power of the Wild. The intensity of the conflict rivaled that of legendary comic book fights, as it mirrored a war in its ferocity. Elektra, who had recruited Frank and herself into the Hand’s ranks under Aka, their second-in-command, engaged in a fierce duel using their iconic weapons – sai against sai. Cole North teamed up with Agony, the symbiote, to rescue Bullet’s son and capture his resurrected Hand-revived body, hoping to find a means of saving him. Stegron and Stilt-Man managed to subdue the dragon. The fight was so extraordinary that it made Stilt-Man appear both useful and impressive!

Absolutely, the primary attraction lay in the confrontation between Daredevil and the Punisher. As usual, their clash echoed with a contrast of methods – baton versus firearm and sword. What made this encounter distinct was that Daredevil wasn’t merely attempting to halt him; he feared the Punisher might be intent on ending his life this time. Throughout this narrative arc, Matt had been striving to improve as a hero, seeking ways to save people in a more impactful manner. This is why he spearheaded the Fist and trained numerous supervillains, except the Punisher was an exception. He was the polar opposite of Daredevil, embodying all that Daredevil was not.

As a movie enthusiast, I’d rephrase it this way: In a grim battle drenched by the pouring rain, Daredevil and the Punisher squared off in the mud. The Punisher bellowed that my belief in a higher power was misplaced, asserting that only a figure like the Punisher could truly save the world, implying that my attempts to rehabilitate villains were merely arming crooks with deadly weapons. Daredevil simply told him to hush. Our history is peppered with past encounters, duels that took place before either of us got entangled in the Hand or Fist. Back then, I dismantled the Punisher, declaring him an amateur compared to me, and hinting that I could end his life at any given moment. Once again, I emerged victorious over the Punisher, and in that moment, I truly pondered whether he was beyond redemption, whether ending his life might be the only solution.

This moment is breathtakingly clear, underscoring the stark contrast between these two characters. If the Punisher were here, he’d have deemed someone unsalvageable and taken lethal action, but Daredevil wouldn’t. Instead, he shoves Frank out of harm’s way to protect the dragon. The dragon had been compelled by the Punisher, while Daredevil’s mission is to save others. However, the Fist was overrun by the undead horde and was forced to withdraw. They may have lost the battle, but they achieved their objectives. They rescued the boy and retrieved Bullet, and Elektra successfully snatched the amulet that revives the Hand’s warriors. The Fist might not have triumphed, but neither did the Hand.

In the storyline, the final showdown for the Fist and the Hand occurred when Daredevil descended into hell, eliminating the evil forces linked to both organizations. However, the confrontation between Daredevil and the Punisher concluded earlier in this narrative. Daredevil emerged victorious over the Punisher, leaving Frank Castle grappling with the reality that despite his relentless army, he was unable to subdue the Man Without Fear. And it was an awe-inspiring spectacle.
