As a seasoned gamer with a penchant for the Marvel universe, I find myself utterly captivated by the latest twist in the Ultimate Universe saga. The revelation that S.H.I.E.L.D., under the guise of H.A.N.D., has been working hand-in-hand with the sinister Hand clan is a mind-boggling turn of events.
For many years, Nick Fury has worked tirelessly for his nation, holding the position of S.H.I.E.L.D.’s director – a division dedicated to strategic homeland defense, intervention, enforcement, and logistics. He’s been instrumental in protecting the world from organizations such as Hydra and A.I.M. On the other hand, the Hand – an ancient ninja cult known for assassination – has been a persistent menace in the Marvel Universe since its introduction in 1981’s Daredevil #174, continuing to pose a problem for centuries.
The organization once known as The Hand has fragmented into several factions. Their ranks are filled with numerous genin, half-trained ninjas who can vanish in a cloud of smoke upon death due to phosphorus ampules surgically embedded within them. Over time, these genin have formed alliances with Baron Strucker, an old adversary of Fury from World War II. This group has often been at odds with Daredevil, who they’ve been hired by the Kingpin (Wilson Fisk) to confront.
The group is recognized for killing extraordinary individuals and bringing them back to life as agents of the Hand, a task they consider an act of devotion to their demonic deity known as the Beast. This practice has encompassed characters like Wolverine from the X-Men team and Elektra, a former leader of the Hand who was also a mercenary.
However, in the Earth-6160 universe, the malevolent Reed Richards from Earth-1610, who is known as the Maker, has reshaped reality to make S.H.I.E.L.D. and the Hand a single entity. In this world, the Ultimates serve as a superhero coalition, rallying together to overthrow the Maker’s Council that secretly controls the planet. Nick Fury heads H.A.N.D., or Heroic Anomaly Neutralization Directorate, a group making its debut this week in the one-shot issue of Ultimate Universe: One Year In #1, penned by Deniz Camp (of The Ultimates fame) and illustrated by Jonas Scharf (known for his work on Hellhunters).
The Beast, the leading aircraft from the H.A.N.D. Helicopter Squadron, serves as a forecasting and preventive strike force for H.A.N.D., safeguarding the global order. Masked as a perpetual, mile-wide storm system, the Beast boasts cutting-edge surveillance equipment and a thermonuclear engine that enables Fury to execute H.A.N.D.’s covert assassinations of individuals deemed terrorists by the Maker’s Council, who consider the Ultimates as a terrorist organization.
Over the past year, Director Fury of H.A.N.D. has been reporting to the Maker’s Council while the Maker is confined in Latveria’s city. The council consists of Henri Duggary, also known as Captain Britain, head of the European Coalition; Emmanuel Da Costa, leader of the Hellfire Club and the Society of South America; the Rasputin trio: Colossus, Magik, and Omega Red, rulers of the Eurasian Republic and Limbo; Emperor Sunfire with Viper and Silver Samurai from Hi No Kuni (“Land of the Sun”); Ra and Khonshu, who govern Africa except for Wakanda; and the Incredible Enlightened Hulk, who controls most of Asia through his Children of Eternal Light cult and the West Coast of North America (now part of the North American Union), but has been reassigned to the European Coalition and the Society of South America.
A war veteran from our world’s equivalent of World War II, Fury worked alongside Dum Dum Dugan and the Howlers until he was called to serve this realm’s ruler: the Maker. Now leading H.A.N.D., Fury is responsible for tracking The Ultimates Terrorist Network, which is undermining the Council’s activities worldwide.
Fury has secretly been working against the Maker’s Council, revealing to them a deep-cover network of embedded operatives in their territories — and a traitor in the Ultimates’ ranks. With just 12 months remaining until the Maker is freed from his temporary prison in the City, a contrite Fury has been attempting to accelerate the overthrow of the Council for the things they made him do for “the greater good”: enabling the Inhuman genocide (and murdering a child Black Bolt), killing a family of Star Children (Power Pack), strangling his friend Dum Dum to death with his bare hands, and neutralizing would-be superheroes as the Maker demanded.
“Ultimate Universe: One Year Later” #1 concludes with Fury initiating a self-destruct mechanism to eliminate the H.A.N.D. Helicarrier, along with the Maker’s Council on board, creating an opportunity for the Ultimates to overthrow the Maker upon his return in a year. It was then unveiled that “Fury” was actually the latest version of LMDs (Artificial People) created by his maker.
Currently, you can purchase the standalone special edition from Marvel Comics. This issue lays the foundation for the second year of the revamped Ultimate Universe.
